I concentrate on hearing the whole piece, but I focus on different parts as they develop. After about 4 parts, it grows difficult to distinguish their themes. Of course, most of the pieces I listen to have no vocals, which I wonder if this difference has any effect on concentration, etc....

I would guess that depending on the person, the existence of vocals makes a big difference. I definitely notice vocals first if they are there, but in a song without vocals, I always pick one or two things to focus on as well.
