Good God. There's something so poignant about that Tim/Sean scenario. And this is just so real and there. I'm sorry, I'm not explaining myself very well.
Plus, Ryan and Beecher in S1? No reason at all for Ryan to single Beecher out. Ryan just thought he was pretty. All the sharing of drugs of each other's hands. Pul-lease, Ryan reaching over Toby's shoulder to give him the heroin to snort of his hand. He's practically blanketing Toby. Then there's the whole, I've been clean since I did my time in the hole thing...sure except when he gets stoned with Toby and they're all over each other.
I missed seeing their relationship in subsequent seasons. What would've been fascinating would be to see Ryan have to choose between Keller and Beecher. Weighing up strategy with lust/affection. Keller's good to have to set plans in motion, but Toby - he wants to touch. It just would've been nice to see Mr I'm-so-straight (and where did that come frome?) having to choose. Much more interesting than the Gloria storyline.
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to actually write that Tim/Sean piece - it keeps niggling at my brain. I'm glad you like the idea. :g: I think I may have come up with a plausible twist for it, although it still might be a stretch for the "something is not what it seems" flashfic - hopefully, no one will mind.
Ryan and Beecher are constantly finding reasons to be all up on each other in S1. That scene with the heroin snorting off of Ryan's hand is usually the tipping point for me, when I finally go "Guh!" and start wandering around on the 'Net, trying to find more Toby/Ryan stories. And Ryan's all about protesting too much, particularly when he lies about being clean. One of the things I find interesting about Ryan in S1, before he gets on his subsequent Gloria kick, is that he seems more aware of how he can use his attractiveness on other men - he clearly, clearly knows that Adebisi keeps eyeing his ass, and he doesn't get defensive about it. He jokes about it and sort of flirts back and, I think, uses it to his advantage.
An alternative S2 would be a wonderful to see. I also would've liked to have seen the "Not Solace" thing you were talking about ages ago.
After S1, the only time, IIRC that Ryan uses his attractiveness is a brief little flirtation with Jason Kramer, and even then it's so obviously forced. He uses it, but doesn't enjoy it, like he does in S1. I mean Ryan's all Gloria and family after that.
One thing I loved was the laundary scene at the start of "Operation Andy", when Beecher does his "or...", I find it incredibly telling that Keller has to ask "or what?", while O'Reilly just looks considering...he knows there's something there.
This is the thing - I sometimes wonder how well Keller ever really knew Beecher. I think ... maybe Ryan was the one who really knew and understood Beecher, far more than Keller did. Which goes back to the idea of Keller underestimating Beecher. Keller's area of expertise, I think, was Vern. Who Beecher kept underestimating ... or maybe was too crazymad for revenge against to think about rationally. But more and more, I think that Keller is just so, so far out of his depth when it comes to Beecher, and ... I was going to say he doesn't even realize it, but I think he does, at least at some points. And it's the points when he realizes it that he becomes dangerous.
Now I really, really have to think about this. Good thing I'm on a re-watching kick and have a three-day weekend coming up. Heh.
I must admit to wondering that when O'Reilly and Keller teamed up, Keller was mainly the muscle man. O'Reilly was the planner. Which leads me back to O'Reilly and Beecher - both have twisty little minds, except O'Reilly isn't as self-pitying as Beecher.
So basically, what I'm saying is that I think Keller underestimated Beecher, and Beecher, in some respects overestimated Keller. I think they got caught in the weaker / stronger mentality, and both liked that about the other. They never really got to know each other. And, to be perfectly honest, I don't think they wanted too. The comfort that they took from each other was enough...except when a third party was involved, that's when it all went to shit. They didn't know enough to trust.
Plus, like Keller said, their relationship was based on brutality. Really, how could it work?
