Lex no longer evil?

I've been pretty absent from fandom of any kind lately, and I feel better for it, I can tell you.  However, the other day I did a little surfing across a bunch of communities and journals, and somewhere or other, I came across the statement that DC is going to be making changes to the comics Lex Luthor, so that he will no longer be Superman's enemy ( Read more... )

I have heard nothing about these plans but the idea doesn't exactly fill me with glee actually ( ... )

Hi. Did you have any trouble posting your comment? LJ is still a bit weird, I think, and it marked your comment as 'suspicious', even though you're a member of the community, and have been since its inception, I believe ( ... )

I assume it was weird because of the link I posted. That's all I can think of. I guess that all my favorite versions of Lex are the most flamboyant ones and I'm afraid this sounds a lot like toning him down.

Of course this is all largely academic to me anyway because I haven't read any DC for a while now because of various off-putting shenanigans. Also I didn't have any money for comics...

Aha! The link. That's a likely explanation for why LJ freaked out. I think it's concerned about spam and DDoS attacks lately and is becoming paranoid, somewhat. :-)))

These possible-but-as-yet-unconfirmed plans for Lex DO sound like toning him down, but I can deal. Other fans may not, of course, and they'll return him to EVOL mastermind status in due course. I haven't read comics for lo, these many years, but I keep up with them somewhat via discussions like these, and I love comic-based movies. So this is all academic for me, too, except for the possibility of Lex being justified somehow, if only temporarily.

This would certainly align him with Michael's portrayal on the show. I don't care about all the "He's irredeemable now. He's always been evil, you see; we told you so." I don't know what show TPTB had been watching because it certainly wasn't the one we had. If Lex was the ultimate evil guy, they have a very different concept of what being evil means.

SV!Lex was never Comics!Lex and showing him as a greyer character in the comics would be a wonderful nod to Michael's creation; the one legacy SV could be proud of. Hopefully, DC won't ruin him the way SV did ruin Superman.

"...If Lex was the ultimate evil guy, they have a very different concept of what being evil means...."

Indeed. And I'm rather amused by the fans who label Lex as evil, for the reasons offered on the show, especially considering that the so-called 'Good Guys' committed every 'evil act' Lex ever did, and then some. :-)))

"...showing him as a greyer character in the comics would be a wonderful nod to Michael's creation...."

I agree. The comics often change because of something in the TV shows or movies. It was because of 'Lois and Clark' that those characters ended up married in the comics, for example.

"...Hopefully, DC won't ruin him the way SV did ruin Superman...."

I hope so, too. I'm trying to hang on to the few shreds of love I have left for Superman, and it's hard.

Wow. Not that I care about comics in any way (just not my thing), but I'd love it if they went with the non-evil Lex. Firstly, I'm all for breaking the traditions that have outlived themselves. Soemtimes you just have to try something new. Non-evil Lex, or Clark romancing anyone but Lois, or less silly Superman suit - hell, I'm all for it! Secondly, VINDICATION!!!:) If OUR poor Lex had to be destroyed simply because it his his "fate" to be evil, then I'd love the new comics to rub it into comics fanatics' faces that no, it's not!:) So yeah, if it's true, I'll be very content. This would go a long way toward making my overall experience in this fandom feel less like a giant waste of time.

I was a huge comics fan when I was a kid, lo these many years ago. I don't give much of a damn about them now, except that I tend to like the movies that spring from them. Superman did have his beginnings in the comics, though, of course. But Lex was all over the map, and so one can't really speak of a Lex Tradition. Therefore, writers can do anything they want with the character without destroying Superman Canon ( ... )
