Here I am again.

I know I haven't posted since... January? But I haven't been spending much time on the internet these days. I'm busy. I've been going swimming just about every day after work (I'm at a 1/4 mile a day now). Back's been in a considerable amount of pain. Had X-rays, had MRIs, no causes yet discovered. Swimming doesn't seem to be helping much, but it ( Read more... )

First off, congrats!

Second, I think people usually do initials, and maybe the date? I don't know, I'm queer. But my guess is it's something like that.

I'm thinking his can say "KFM-GDE" and mine "GDE-KFM." I feel like I should at least call the jewelers and let them know that we haven't forgotten them.

I've been thinking on and off about how randomly lucky we are to be a straight couple that we can do this and be recognized in NY. Although not gay, I do identify as queer (in a gender-dysphoric kind of way), so it troubles me. I mean: What on earth makes the two of us more suited for marriage than any other couple chosen from names in a hat?

At least our gov'nor is trying to get the state to recognize all unions that are recognized in the state where they were performed (ie, California). He's for extending marriage in this state, but says that right now we can at least respect out-of-state gay marriages, since we respect other out-of-state unions. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

Props to you for being aware of the "straight" privilege.

Personally, I also have sort of divided views about the whole gay marriage issue anyway. (Shouldn't queer lobbyists be more focused on things like, I don't know, trans violence? And who decided that having the government dictate a religious institution was a good idea? Shouldn't *everyone* just have a civil union, and do whatever they want in a church/synagogue/mosque/temple/etc.?)

*shrugs*

So are you guys planning a fun trip? I mean, it'd be a shame to miss a vacation opportunity. Then again, you could do what my parents did. It was my dad's second marriage, so they had my half-brother (5) and my half-sister (2) along for the honeymoon. Since they didn't get a "real" honeymoon, they keep having second- third- fourth- etc. honeymoons. Sounds like a plan to me.

Yep, I have questions about marriage being a legally-sanctioned anything with tax-breaks and such. It's just strange.

We're thinking New Orleans. He's never been, and I haven't been since I turned 21, so it'll be even better this time around.

Congrats! Put whatever you want on the inside and just because it's free doesn't mean you have to put anything at all, you know (in the middle of reading "Predictably Irrational" which includes a chapter on the weirdness of "zero cost" aka "free!" and what it does to our otherwise logical decision making skills).

Also, I have the same issues with the marriage thing as discussed here. After studying marriage in a law course at Vassar I'm even more confused (once you make it a contract that merely contains legal benefits and no religious significance what's to stop people from having a perfectly good case for marrying family members under their care? A contract can't mandate love or sex very well and are either of those actually required for marriage?). *sigh* Not against any of it, but the implications are worth considering.

Says the girl who can't wait to marry her boyfriend and is psyched about California's recent ruling in favor of gay marriage...
