This is a wonderful story. I love the way you sectioned it, and felt carried along with it, eager to see what glimpse of them you'd give us next, even though it probably all had to end sadly.

“One day, when we’re old and tall, we’ll still be best friends. And we’re going to get married,” she finished simply.

Oh! Tall! Honey!

If he had to marry someone, it might as well be Lily. “Okay,” he said, hoping he’d be taller than Lily when they got married.

I'm having a thing where inside my head there are these squeaky noises cos the cute is strangling me.

“Funny mine should be a bird too,” she commented. “Like they wanted to be together.”

Severus didn’t think there was anything funny about it.

*sigh*

“I don’t condone the things you’ve been up to or the company you keep but I’ve realized something: None of it matters. When we were children, you held my hand and told me that we would be best friends forever. What happened to us ( ... )

*blushes* Oh gosh! I'm so proud that my story had such a profound effect on you. I'm really glad that even through your exasperation with Lily, you could still see her struggle. I was worried that her actions would seem erratic and cold.

I felt that haunting sadness as I wrote this story and I'm so honored that it resonated with you as well. You inspire such intense emotion for me with almost every story you write and I'm happy to have returned the favor!

Had she realized she loved him so much that she wanted to give him that last gift or had she simply been determined that James should not have it?

Hmmm, an interesting thought.

I like the raven and hummingbird Patronuses.

I've always thought that the doe/stag thing must have occurred later and I wondered if Lily's Patronus hadn't always been inspired by the men she loved.

Thanks for the review!

Such a wonderful story.

On the sixth day of her silence, Severus charmed one of Mulciber’s Quidditch action figures to walk over to her dormitory and relay a message:

So cute.

You're very welcome! Despite being terrified that I'd let you down, I'm really happy that I got your prompt. It forced me to push myself and I'm really proud of the product.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Sev's dark humor. I've never written him with such a cruel streak but it seemed fitting and his snarky jokes were a pleasure to write!

Isn't the raven just perfect for our boy!

You're right about Sev not daring to wish for more. The simplicity of having Lily all to himself was perfect happiness for him.

I wonder if, in speculating that it was in kindness to him or denial of James, Severus rather misses the point? It seems to me that it is more about Lily herself than it is about either man.I think you're absolutely right. Severus still doesn't get it. At that point, Lily has finally realized what Severus doesn't understand until the very end. At that point, she has a lot of regret. Her virginity was an honor she had always intended for Severus and it was the last and most precious thing she could share with him. I thought of that ( ... )
