Guess what time it is??
I guess I'm a couple days late on this one which is a surprise, but oh well, this is the first thing I'm doing in 2016!
If you're even aware that my lj still exists, you can check up all the other ones I've done for
2009,
2011,
2012,
2013, and
2014. I guess I missed 2010 cause that was the year I was trapped in Iceland and then I just spent Christmas lying on the floor crying because I wasn't freezing my ass off at the PDS stagedoor instead of surrounded by family and friends in my childhood home.
1. What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before?
got an apartment all to myself!!!!!, owned a car, wrecked and totalled said car, had car insurance, joined a church organization of my own free will, drove a uhaul, saw fourteen deer in one place, did I mention LIVED WITHOUT ROOMMATES
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
apparently I've never done new years resolutions, but this year I do want to get back on HabitRPG (I checked into the inn a month ago when I moved to my new place!) and I'd like to get exercise into my life and I want to start working all available overtime so I can afford a car payment
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
well I found out my middle school best friend has THREE CHILDREN, but she didn't produce them all in the past year
4. Did anyone close to you die?
I didn't lose anyone but I do still cry about my Granny at the drop of a hat even though that had to be 2008 when she died. But her older brother Bryce died not too long ago. He didn't say much at family reunions and honestly I couldn't even tell you which of the quiet old dudes he was but my dad was stressed about it. Oh, also my punch buggy Beadle Bamford
5. What countries did you visit?
I did not leave the US this year unfortunately! But I learned the mysterious and vaguely exotic city of Charlotte, NC!
6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
financial stability, enough money
7. What dates from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I'm still very bad with dates but I believe May 29 was the day I left Springer, my publishing company job in NYC, got sloppy drunk in despair bc I loved everyone there and that job so much but I was sick of NYC, so May 30th would have been the day of The Drunken Uhaul Drive Across America that convinced me miracles are real and got me back in the church lol. Also June 26, marriage equality! OH and October 21, 2015... BACK TO THE FUTURE DAY
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
First, leaving NYC and a great job to move to a random city I picked because my granddad's family lived here when they were young and I have distant relations scattered about; then finding a badass MetLife job that provided me with MONTHS of training, a Series 9 FINRA license (I got an 88 on my test!), and tons of room for advancement down the line... and THEN I finally got an apartment all to myself!
9. What was your biggest failure?
Either crashing the punch buggy on Christmas Eve or giving up on exercise and stuff these past few months
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I still have that pinched nerve from last year! My back and shoulders are always super wonky which is really worrying me.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Definitely NOT my punch buggy. I loved that car but listing all the things that turned out to be broken on it is impossible because something new ALWAYS springs to mind. I recently discovered Goodwill and I have a bunch of zebra print lampshades that only cause me $2 each. Also I bought paint and I repainted the cheap wood veneer bedroom set my parents gave me (that I grew up with) and now instead of being dark, chipped fake wood they're black on top, white down the sides, with pink drawers that have black handles. They look awesome in my tacky pink and zebra room.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Kelley my goddamn hero who kept me alive on the Drunken Uhaul Drive Across America, made my birthday amazing, and just sent me ten million presents in the mail for Christmas, and who is the only thing I miss about NYC (besides access to Broadway shows)
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Roommates again. The ones I had when I first moved to Charlotte were just so hard to live with. I call them the Hoarder Thief and Princess Puppy Abuser. Also, people who support Donald Trump for president?? yikes
14. Where did most of your money go?
The savings I was bragging about in the last year one went partially to the punch buggy (RIP) and mostly to keeping me alive for the couple of months it took for me to find my feet once I hit Charlotte. I'm closing out the year with $650 in credit card debt that I still haven't been able to pay down yet, plus the ever-present student loans which I just consolidated, plus rent and utilities that I no longer split, PLUS I'm going to have to buy myself a new car in the next couple of weeks and will have a car payment this time since I don't have much savings anymore. BUT hey, I have a beautiful one bedroom apartment with a huge balcony that's in the middle of southern Charlotte but also IN THE WOODS and surroundered by birdies and deer, with very quiet neighbors and black appliances in the kitchen... and my rent is $25 less a month for here than I paid for that 10x5 ft room in NYC that was so small I had to sleep in a hammock.
15. What were you really, really, really excited about?
moving to the new apartment!!! moving to Charlotte in general was a huge goal that I met for myself and honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. And right now I admit I'm kinda excited to get a new car... with a working CD player! And all the other things like the power locks, cranking on the first try in general, four doors instead of two, a horn that doesn't randomly go off when no one is touching it, interior lights when you open the door... imagine
16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
Even though it's not a song I obsessed over, the Hello song by Adèle and that SNL skit where they're all singing it at Thanksgiving to shut up racist relatives. My cousin kept doing that this Thanksgiving and it was hilarious. Also, in order to be sort of thematic to my mood:
Wait for It 17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) Happier or sadder? I am so much happier. I can't even wrap my head around how happy I am. I found this amazing social justice church (a UU) with an active young adult group who are all so close to being exactly my speed and who are all a great, ready-made friends group that I never had in NYC (or Paris!), I have this amazing customer service job with tons of overtime and advancement opportunities. I feel like a stray who found a forever home tbh. I'm looking at going from this apartment (that I love!!) to a townhouse or condo next year or the year after so I can start paying on a place I would OWN, then I can rent it out
b) Bigger or smaller? I gained a lot of weight when I got to Charlotte, probably cause I didn't have to walk anymore (no more fifth floor walkup!!) and I started actually buying real food from Trader Joe's instead of eating mac and cheese for every meal
c) Richer or poorer? Weirdly I'm currently poorer just cause those savings are gone. It was rough financially until I got to MetLife in August, so I was trying to survive off a Target paycheck starting in July but the roommates I had at the time tore through utilities like you wouldn't BELIEVE and we still split the bills evenly
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I'm still awful at writing my French families. I don't know why correspondence stresses me out so much. I wish everyone would just be my fb friend and keep up with me when I pop up in their timeline.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I'd like to work on being a better listener... "talk less, smile more" lol. I'm also finding a way to let gratitude be a driving force in my life (thanks UU!) and let it power my desire for social change rather than solely outrage, because I lapse into a place of judgement very easily and I want to be more accepting of people who think differently than I do
20. How did you spend Christmas?
crashed my car haha! Have I mentioned yet how BEAUTIFUL it is to be able to go home to see my parents at the drop of a hat? I'm two hours away so seeing them is still a treat but it's not a twice-a-year experience like it was in NYC... it just takes two hours and a quarter-tank of gas. Anyway the whole fam was over like usual, including my Grandmom's weird fiancé who actually creeped my cousin out big time haha
21. How many one-night stands?
same as last year, honestly I don't know how this will ever not say zero. I am so ace
22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
From last year: i fucking love my own company. i love being alone in the apartment so i can make smart-ass remarks at whatever tv show im marathoning and then just laugh and appreciate my hilariousness.
23. What was your favourite TV programme?
The shows I got the most excited about this year were Jane the Virgin, Nashville weirdly enough, and Brooklyn Nine Nine. Girl Meets World is still very important to me
24. How will you see in the New Year?
I'm cheating because I'm writing this Jan 1 and I can say I had ten UU buddies over in my new place (first guests since the move!) and we played board games, drank minimally, and all stood in a circle with our phone alarms set for midnight when countdown time came.
25. Do you hate / dislike anyone now that you didn't hate / dislike this time last year?
I feel like I'm a lot more full of love this year than I was last year
26. What was the best book you read?
Considering what a bookworm I was when I was a kid it's kind of shocking how little I read anymore! The only books I read this year were Bel-Ami (worst protag ever UGH) and The Red and the Black which I didn't even finish cause I also hated ITS protag so much haha
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Hamilton obviously, sorry King Arthur Musical. But also Zaho!!!
28. What did you want and get?
everything!!!!! I have like, everything I've ever wanted! I can't afford a hybrid and am renting instead of paying a mortgage right now but other than that it's so gooooood
29. What did you want and not get?
a couch? a washer and dryer? one of those fancy Dyson v6 motorhead vaccuums?
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
hmmmMMMmmm... this is a cheat but they streamed all three Back to the Future movies on 10/21 in the AMC down the road with enormous recliners for chairs and it was sooo funnnnNNNN! I also discovered Rifftrax Live and Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny had me laughing so much I couldn't get air into my lungs and walked out with a hacking cough
31. What did you do on your birthday?
Kelley took me to a fancy restaurant with amazing food and then we stood on a street corner and talked for a billion hours, and I think this was the year my work bestie made me that FANCY pink zebra cake!
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
if Kelley would move to Charlotte GAH
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
old, worn-out clothes that really need to be replaced/updated, skirts that are way shorter than I realized and leggings that are probably a size too small, but bright colors and lots of patterns
34. What kept you sane?
my mom letting me rant at her about roommates and stuff
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I think I'm team Billie Piper right now
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
marriage equality! Feel the Bern! Black Lives Matter!
37. Who did you miss?
KELLEY GODDAMMIT and also Vincent!
38. Who was the best new person you met?
my entire UU crew!!!!! I adore themmmm. And almost everyone on my team at my job is amazing
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015.
Honesty, kindness, and gratitude make life so much better
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now!"
41. What was your favourite moment of the year?
Is the New Year's Party I just had an option? Maybe that or the moment my 88 appeared on the screen after I took the FINRA series 6 test. OR! Going to Carowinds with Kelley and Katherine!
42. What was your least favourite moment of the year?
having to leave Springer
43. Where were you when 2015 began?
From 2014: "chilling in my room in my pjs, feeling smug that I escaped Times Square with my life"
44. Who were you with?
From 2014: "the gerbs"
45. Where will you be when 2015 ends?
I cheated cause it was last night but I was in my very own apartment in the woods IN CHARLOTTE with tons of food and booze
46. Who will you be with when 2015 ends?
Ten members of my YAG crew!
47. What was your favourite month of 2015?
December I guess! Because I had my apartment and my car (lol) and my crew and my job all FINALLY in place
48. Did you drink a lot of alcohol in 2015?
I did get drunk at the Bercy livestream in July because this was the year we invented the ultimate drinking game: when there's a closeup of the drummer, take a swig. Oh god and I polished off so much wine the night after I left Springer, leading to the Drunken Uhaul Drive Across America where Kelley kept me sane and safe but it totally changed my life because I have never been that scared and full of regret in my life. I grab a bottle of red wine at the grocery store when I think I deserve it and it always takes about a week to polish it off
49. Did you do a lot of drugs in 2015?
nope!
50. How many people did you sleep with in 2015?
still none... it was funny cause at the New Years party my friends were complaining like ohhhh, I haven't had sex since SEPTEMBER, it's so HORRIBLE and I didn't say anything but... lol I haven't had sex since like... 2012. Idk I just don't see the necessity
51. Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
the car accident that killed my bug was my fault. I was looking at my GPS. :(
52. What was the worst lie someone told you in 2015?
"I'll stop stealing your Tide Pods" lol
53. Did you treat somebody badly in 2015?
Hm, I'm not sure. Last night I talked a small amount of shit about one of my YAG friends who is loud and never stops talking about her obsession with pot and sex and just wears me outtttt and I need to not do that
54. Did somebody treat you badly in 2015?
I really didn't like the way the Princess Puppy Abuser roommate acted all the time, and the Hoarder Thief refused to SPEAK TO ME when I said I was moving out... for like a MONTH. She would pretend she couldn't hear me if I asked her a question???? this is an adult
56. How much money did you spend in 2015?
basically everything I had plus another $600 on car repairs hahaha
57. If you could go back in time to any moment of 2015 and change what?
I just spent a really long time thinking about this and nothing is coming to mind. Even awful things like the Drunken Uhaul Drive Across America served a purpose that turned out for the best
58. What are your plans for 2016?
drive incredibly safely, probably become an official member of the UU, exercise regularly, keep my place super neat, find a couch.. get promoted or get a raise, SEE HAMILTON IN OCTOBER OMG, maybe get to France for real?
I've actually been giving thought throughout the year to filling out this survey thing because I know how happy I am and I can't wait to document that "I made it" at last!
