I strongly suspect that most romance authors do not have waist-length hair. Photographs and Phantoms is one of many, many romances I've read where the hero unbraids and/or brushes the heroine's hair and then they have passionate sex. I agree with you about hair and sexual activity. Mine is unruly and tends to get in the way even when back, though I've yet to try anything with it french braided. One lady did like having my hair down, though.

The phrase "just rape her instead" is a little disturbing to me.

Romance novel villains are often disturbing, which I generally don't mind. I've only read one so far where the heroine was raped (and the author handled it well). I find these convoluted plots to marry the heroine ridiculous, contrived, and easy to thwart, if they don't fail on their own.
