Campaign Month continues!

The next campaign I am supporting is "Adopt a Small Group Member"

Are you at school or university? Do your classes involve ongoing group work? If they do and you enjoy that group work and have a good group you are part of a privileged minority! Most of the world’s small groups do not have the benefits that you have. For every small group that works well there are six that don't! What follows are some of the ways that a person, such as yourself, can end in a substandard small group.

(This list is by no means covers all possibilities, but it does give a window into how this happens)
1. A "she'll be right" attitude in the group: As a result of this a poor person such as you finds themselves panicked and wondering what to do. They want to achieve the best mark they can in a subject, but can't because the group is intent on winging it with the least amount of work possible.

2. The Dictator: One person in the group assigns themselves as group leader when in fact they know nothing about the topic to be covered, or for that matter the field of knowledge that the topic is in. Unfortunate individuals that find themselves stuck in this situation try to communicate their idea but are shut down with lines such as: "I don't see what Marx has to do with the topic question 'Explain the origins of communism'", or "I think sedimentary rocks is to much of a technical term in explaining what rock type sandstone is," or "That’s not how the French Revolution happened in Dr. Who"

3. Meetings, what are they?: A group considers the only meeting time they need is in class, in the 35 seconds that are allocated to swap contact information, which they don't do. No-body has any idea of what work they are to do or how to go about it.

4. Sexual Tension: Where some members of a small group are more concerned about "getting a feel" than "getting a feel for the topic"

There are others but you get the idea, but for the Grace of God, you could have found yourself in a group that suffers from these kind of afflictions. For whatever reason YOU have been lucky, YOU are in a position of privilege, YOU CAN HELP!

The "adopt a student" program gives successful small groups to reach out to those less fortunate. By doing things like inviting the disadvantaged student to your meetings and hang out times of your group YOU are helping them in getting a better small group and learning experience! YOU and your group can help the student through a difficult time in their academic life, give assistance and advice. Some small groups have even found that they liked the adopted student so much they had the poor student transferred into their group! The small group’s lives were enriched so much by helping someone so disadvantaged and dislocated.
