Iwo Jima Flag-Raising Photographer Dies

Joe Rosenthal, The Associated Press photographer who won a Pulitzer Prize for his immortal image of World War II servicemen raising an American flag over battle-scarred Iwo Jima, has died. He was 94.

That picture is beautiful.

I have to admit that most of the JFK pics mean a lot to me. Especially the one where he's standing outside the White House with Bobby Kennedy. I love that one. For me, it defines the era.

This, from the OKC bombing.

This from the My Lai massacre.

Both are pretty brutal, but I think that's what the essence of photography is. To show you things you would otherwise not see, or turn a blind eye to.

Pictures like that make me fall in love with photography all over again.

I really hope someday I have a knack for capturing defining moments; moments that normally would be shunned as too mundane otherwise.

I have never ever seen that picture before, but then again, I'm not American, so it makes sense that I haven't. It's a gorgeous photograph though, really gorgeous.
