face of Socrates

I wonder why the wisest philosopher of all times, Socrates, is perhaps the ugliest one as well? Reading "The Masks of Socrates" by Zanker, Socrates was famous for ugliness... Is there any significance in this fact? Another reminder that true beauty is concealed and has to be discovered beyond the surface?

hm...do not see an immediate connection between Socrates` ugly face and a search for meaning.. could you unfold your statement a bit more here?

and why then Socrates was so ugly? -- considering (arguably) that he had the most beautiful soul of all?
