This week's recs:
INTO THE WHITE (2012)
It’s World War II and the English and German armies are fighting over the skies of Norway. Two planes crash and two sets of men wander through the snow looking for shelter and food. Little do they know that they will meet and will need to work together despite the fact that the two countries they belong to are at war.
Into the White (Cross of Honour in the UK) is based on a true story of five men who became friends in an unlikely time. Two Brits and three Germans end up sharing quarters with each other in the Norwegian wilderness, until they get rescued.
The movie shows the relationship between all the men but mostly Gunner Robert Smith’s with Karl-Heinz Strunk and Lt. Horst Schopis with Capt. Charles P. Davenport. Schopis and Davenport are the ranking officers among the men. The two men conflict with each other over control of the situation, but eventually come to an agreement and mutual respect.
Rupert Grint plays Gunner Robert Smith. He is a feisty character and brings laughs in tense situations. He holds his own in the group of men. He curses a lot which is fun to watch. His relationship with Strunk starts off in a taunting way as the man doesn’t speak a lot of English, but they come to find common ground and actually become friends.
Rupert does a terrific job in working with all the other personalities and while he does add humor, it isn’t forced. It’s a biting, dark humor that works perfectly with the story. His character’s personality is also a bit crude, so there are scenes of Rupert in middle of when nature calls. You can’t see anything (which is unfortunate) but his attitude and facial expressions are humorous and at times feed off the annoyance of Strunk, who he has good chemistry with as their characters friendship grows.
A beautiful scene is when the men are watching the Northern Lights as Rupert sings Over the Rainbow. There are some gruesome scenes with the third German who was badly injured as the men all work together to care for him.
The DVD and Blu-Ray are available in the US and UK. The movie is 107 minutes and rated R for language. If you don’t know German and Norwegian, you need to put on the English with Foreign Language subtitles.
The German names are real and the English names have been changed. The end credits tell what happened to everyone.
Sadly, sometimes all that keeps people from being friends is war. It’s a very touching, poignant, and entertaining movie and it’s a true, incredible story.
