Here is Wolfie’s first post from
December 10th .
We used to do Pride recs quite a few years ago. We will be reviewing Rupert and Dan’s respective movies every couple of days. Hope you enjoy!
This week's recs:
WHAT IF? (2013)
Can you be just friends with a girl? This is the age old question that Wallace needs to figure out. Chantry has a boyfriend but adores Wallace and seems content to keep things as is, for a while anyway.
What If? What if you stay only friends? What if you cross that line? What happens to the friendship? All these questions are put to the test in this movie starring Dan and Zoe Kazan as Wallace and Chantry. It is a cute movie, not a deep thinker, but with humor and a touch of the dramatic.
Both stars do a terrific job and Dan is at his best when he is in scenes with more drama. He gives a lovely performance with lots of banter that we expect from him, but he is terrific when his woe-is-me personality turns to anger.
In one particularly good scene, he and Chantry get stuck on the beach and are forced into an uncomfortable situation. It starts off humorous, as he is holding a branch in front of his naked self but as the two of them get more frustrated, you feel the seriousness of the scene. Dan’s character gets angry at the situation, then at Chantry, then at his best friend without getting loud and overdoing it. It’s better than a shouting scene because the calm of his zings make you believe he is upset.
It’s not a movie that I would see normally, but it was sweet and Dan is in it. It’s about twenty-somethings in love and the naivety and confusion that goes with it.
It is known in some countries as The F Word. It is 101 minutes long and is rated PG-13 for sexual content including references throughout, partial nudity and language.
