Roast Shatnaaar

Aug 15, 2006 21:10

Okay, so not living in the US means I won't see the actual event, but the video previews are... unusual. Leonard Nimoy is a pointy eared pussy and George Takei... *sporfle*

OMGDennyCrane! That probably makes no sense to anyone who didn't just see Bill Shatner with his pants down and a big bullseye on his... underpants

bizarro links, oddness, shatnimoy, nimoy, video

i think i must be the only person who finds the prospect of this Roast thing really terrifying. a whole show to redicule and insult someone?? even seeing it talked about around my Flist hasmade my stomach turn with empathy, i don't understand how people can watch it! eep.

i so *so* need to get into Boston Legal. the things i've heard about that show seem too good to be true! :D

I don't know that's it's something I could actually watch... I agree with you that the idea of an entire show of insults is pretty dumb. And I don't think Nimoy was altogether joking about his objections to it - he has big issues with actors having dignity and not being made fun of. That said, I really think Shatner has enough ego to survive. (And the promo videos made my day.) :-)

I love Boston Legal more every week. Shatner has truly earned his Emmys and Golden Globes and whatever else for his role. Denny Crane is brilliant. Shatner and James Spader together are just adorable. And there's an overall quirkiness that I love too.

Yeah, alot of it is my own squick at that kind of thing... although i think having a good laugh at yourself is important (and great fun :P) there's a point where it turns into something i can't cope with... It's all a bit strange.

I hadn't realised he got awards for Denny! He certainly deserves it, he's a brilliant actor.

No one laughs more at Bill Shatner than Bill Shatner. It's his saving grace - not taking himself too seriously. He knows people ape him and laugh, and he laughs with them. That kind of thing I can dig, but the more I hear about this Roast thing, the more I think it'll go too far. Probably just as well a I can't watch it.

Shatner's picked up a couple of Emmys and a Golden Globe... that I know of. He's brilliant. The most absurd character I've ever seen. :-D

Hahahahaha... the more I see of those two, the more I respect Nimoy. Shatner, of course, will always be Captain Kirk, at least until I see any footage of him as anyone else. Don't know what he's thinking, doing this roast thing. It sounds very squicky.

Shatner was always Kirk until I saw Boston Legal. Now, if someone asked me which role I thought he was born to play, I'd have a hard choice. Denny Crane is absurd... in an awesome way. :-)

I guess he knows what he's in for with the roast thing, but I'm sorta glad I won't see it. Give me a good dose of Denny Crane any day. *g*

Eeeep! Just as well I won't see it... but I enjoyed the video of him with Nimoy. They've become quite amusing in their old age, LOL.

Love the clips.
As for the Roast, I'll probably watch it...I've seen a few of the ones they've done in the past, and they can be quite amusing (and I know Shatner's ego can take the verbal abuse) as long as the 'roasters' don't go too far (most don't, but once in a while, someone will go beyond the bounds of good taste, and get downright nasty, at which point, I change the channel for a bit, and come back when the next person takes their crack at the 'roasted')

Agreed. I'm fairly uncomfortable with Roasts, unless the person involved is a real tool and then its just funny. Many of them do go waay too far and when it comes to an icon like Shatner, who too often has been parodied, ridiculed, mocked, whatever for his trademark acting style, this could get nasty.

Or, it could be harmless and be done in homage to a great man.

I may just wait for the reviews. I think Shatner can take it, otherwise he wouldn't have agreed to it.

Shatner seems to be ready for whatever they dish out. I guess I'll find out if it goes too far by what people say afterwards. :-)

Yeah, I think Shatner's ego will take it. :-) I do hate seeing things get nasty, though.

p.s. I absolutely LOVED Shatner and Spader as flamingoes. Too cute!

I think Nimoy is right. I was a bit shocked to see all the inappropriate language. And it's not showing George Takei in a very positive light. It's making him look pretty bad. And I'm sure he's not like that! But then again this is Comedy Central we're talking about. The Leonard Nimoy video was funny. I liked it, but I don't like this whole 'Roast' thing. It makes him sound like some kind of chicken on a stick or something. And it's a really strange idea. It's pretty degrading looking too. I'd never do anything like that. But ya know, Bill Shatner always likes making fun of himself...and if this is his way of getting his kicks...then good for him. I'm sticking with Nimoy on this one. I won't be watching it, I don't have cable.

I know the video was meant to be a joke, but from what I know of Nimoy, I would say that he wasn't entirely joking about his reasons for not wanting to be part of the roast. Not living in the US, I've never seen one of these events, so I didn't really know what they were about, but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing Nimoy usually likes to do.

I didn't know what to make of the George Takei video, but the Shatner-Nimoy one made me laugh. It helps to know that they have a long and great friendship, and that their teasing is always just... teasing. I love how Shatner's always teasing Nimoy about how old he is - and he's older (by 4 days, LOL).

Agreed. I thought it was funny. xD And I like to see them together. But, your right, Nimoy just doesn't seem completly in love with the idea. I mean, he is trying to be good about it. But I don't think he's the type for this kind of thing. It gets into some pretty nasty topics. And I think he just isn't that kind of guy. But I could be wrong. xD

Oh, I didn't think so :-) The Devil's Food Cake comment sounds like the way I talk/think. I doubt it's true, but I loved seeing Shat's face upon hearing it. He wasn't expecting THAT!
