I have a new computer! It's a very shiny, all-in-one unit (a massive 23" and is touchscreen for reasons that I don't understand, but like touching nonetheless). Also, after much crying, and the almost complete destruction of my old computer, I managed to remove the hard drive (seriously, do they glue them in there?), temporarily plugged it up to my ( Read more... )

all is right with the world

Me too :) And I actually felt vaguely knowledgable while doing it (even though I basically followed step-by-step instructions I found on goodle *g*)

That's a relief! I remember a few months ago I had this external that was dying and I did not want to try and get all the files again. Stuck that thing in the freezer and transferred them off before it died. I would never wish loss of files on anyone.

That actually worked? That's awesome! I 'accidentally' tripped over the cord for my external hard drive and dropped it on the floor - and it just whined at me pathetically. I didn't even think about trying to fix that one, just started trying to replace all the files again.

Live and learn!

The funny thing is I'd dropped them before but never more than 2 feet and onto carpet...so they were fine. But then this one of the two I have, though, it had a cord jerked and it fell hard recently and all these files got corrupted but most were ok. Soon it would click and whir when I plugged it in until I shoved it in the freezer double bagged for 2 or so hours then pulled it out and the files immediately transferred faster. I kept going back and forht doing that until it was all off. Took me a while but it'd have taken me months to relocate everything, it was just downloaded HD tv files but still!

I'm definitely going to try that next time (because no doubt there will be a next time). And TV files are just annoying (and time consuming!) to replace. And it worked and didn't use up all your sanity and free time ;)

Me too! Now I just have to begin the process of bringing everything back over and re-downloading/installing all my software that I had :)

I would have probably had a small nervous breakdown. Argh. I'm so glad you managed to save everything. ♥ The one time I broke my laptop (by dropping it half an inch onto *carpet* - I don't know either) I was completely beside myself. *hugs*

I've actually done that as well! Thankfully the laptop lived, even if the battery never survived. Actually I think a lot of my computer mishaps (this one excluded) were because I'd dropped them *g*

Let's see how long this new one lasts. And I will endeavour to back up things more often! *nods like I'll actually do that*

I'm kind of glad to meet someone who's as clumsy with them as me - even though I tell myself time and again 'I must not drop the laptop...'. Haha.

And backing up? Isn't that what logical, sane people do? *checks behind self, sighs* Can't find one there yet. (I'm awful at it. AWFUL.)

I either switch between cradling it gently like a baby, or clutching it half-heartedly with one hand and swinging it as I walk. I'll never learn!

I do it religiously at the beginning, and then am like 'eh, I'll do it later, everything will be fine'. Famous last words ;)
