Went to a birthday hangi today for my second cousin Bruce's 50th and my great aunty Helen's 74th. While I was sitting next to my mum and eating some truly marvelous ambrosia salad, she turned to me to tell me about her visit to the cemetery this week. Speaking as someone who has lost both their parents I understand completely. The sorrow and grief never truly leave they just fade into the background with time. Then something, anything from the simplest comment or a hint of scent brings it up from where its buried like a tsunami and you can't help but to relive the loss once more. It always catches you at the worst times in my experience.
