"Despicable Me." What a title. I can't believe it wasn't already taken. I saw this tonight in a theater packed with teens and adults (maybe one or two kids, tops). I'm absolutely loving the place animation has staked in mainstream culture. ^_^v ( Read more... )

Although it seems that animation had to go 3D CGI (ala Pixar) before adults and mainstream culture started looking at it more seriously.

I get amused whenever I see the clip of the little girl going, "IT'S SO FUFFY!!!" XD

Or maybe it's more due to the fact that Pixar introduced more mature, cogent storytelling in animation. Who's to say which it is? Although, I have been noticing lately what 3D CGI really adds -- every single character is always moving, even while in the background, lending an amazing realism to the environment that was difficult for 2D animators to match. Maybe that's part of it, too.

Hahaha I loove that trailer. It seems like it should be a ho-hum joke, but the execution is somehow funny and adorable. The trailers for Despicable Me actually made me WANT TO SEE IT. Pixar could take a cue, here.

It probably added to the fact, but I honestly don't think it would have been noticed if not for the 3D animation. I remember thinking The Emperor's New Groove was a brilliant movie, but hugely overlooked. Even I watched it on DVD because I originally panned it off as a just another goofy kid's film.

Hmmm...Maybe it's kind of like how animation in the beginning was a novelty, so general audiences went to see it. Let's hope the novelty isn't the only reason audiences are flocking. After 15 years of this stuff, though, I think it's getting more mainstream than ever. :)
