It's okay to feel better that it'll miss your family. Human nature and all that, right? I admittedly am not all that familiar with Texas, but it seems if it misses directly going over Houston, that would be a good thing just population-wise.
Hmm, a tea house. Yes, I think I need a tea house to hang out at. Iced tea (flavored, of course) is one of my favorite beverages, and it seems like all you can find around here is Lipton or something equally boring. The Starbucks Passion Tea Lemonade is pretty damn good, though. Have to admit that one.
Hmm...Portland took in a few thousand Katrina refugees, and Detroit did as well. And many, many universities across the country are providing enrollment to students at affected unis for no cost or just cost of books. Not quite the same as opening up huge stadiums, though. :)
The teahouse would be a wonderful place, if it weren't for the fact that their air conditioner has not worked for the past month. As both times I've gone it's been unbelievably sweltering (yay 100+ temps), no airconditioning is not a good thing. It's enough to drive me back to Starbucks :)
I haven't tried that lemonade thing, but will have to the next time I go.
I know it hasn't been the same magnitude of response for the refugees in other states, but that's partly because it's hard to relocate all those people so far away. Texas, Alabama, Mississippi - we're all right by Louisiana, they can just bus the people over within a day (8 hours between NO and Houston). But that doesn't mean people from other states, and other countries, aren't helping. I cannot believe that lady was so idiotic ignorant as to not know that.
I cannot believe there are only 50 states! Are you sure? Why would they create 52 cards in a deck, and not match that to the number of states? That isn't fair. Huh. Maybe she was thinking of Puerto Rico and um...Canada?
Yes, Detroit has taken in thousands of former NO residents here - put the kids in school and everything. There was one guy who drove up here in his Jeep Cherokee and found a place to live. He decided to drive back down to the shelters to get his family and bring them to Detroit, but his Jeep was vandalized - some collision center fixed his car for free and then Daimler Chrysler gave him a new Jeep, apologizing for his crappy introduction to Detroit. If you get out of the city, it is really a nice place to live. So that was kind of nice to hear.
Hehe, no Canada cannot become part of the US, because then I cannot contemplate running away to Canada if things become too bad here, politically. I'm guessing she was counting Iraq. It's totally a part of the US now, whether it wants to be or not.
Aw that was nice of Chrysler to do that. And I think that woman was just being stupid. I was especially amused by the whole juxtaposition (oooooh SAT word!) of the "Why do we have to do all the work" speech with the "OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING!!11!" speech. If the world is really ending, wouldn't you want to look especially good by doing lots of work and not complaining about it?

Sometimes DC is considered it's own state, but not on my watch. I'll stick with the 50.
(I deleted my last comment because I put Iraq as our 51st country instead of state, I typo'd!)
