There was a LOT happening on that show, and a lot of parallels and not-quite parallels and the introduction of all the characters very pilot-style. I feel like beyond the drunk grandmother and the gay sun who is fucked up, they at least BENT the other cliches. Although it is quite common to mock the dynamics of the Clintons. And I was quite drunk, so I might have missed a lot.
IN ANY CASE, I definitely found it insanely entertaining and I hope you're wrong about it not lasting. I want it to last. I do so enjoy it.
I didn't think it was trying to be The West Wing, but maybe that's just because the characters talked like people talk.
There was absolutely the pilot sort of clunkiness to it, but I always follow the XF rule when it comes to pilots. Unless the pilot is Charlie's Angels, in which case I say holy shit you suck, and move on.
A thought I just had: at this point is it actually bending the cliche to be back to the gay son being the fucked up one? As in, have there now been enough shows where the gay son is the one who has it all together that it's re-edgified to have him be the coke-snorting check-stealing screwup? JUST A THOUGHT, and not a deep one.
Huh, I guess they mostly do talk like people talk. Except that amazing speech she gave to Carla Gugino on the plane. About how she keeps going.
Huh. I mean. I hadn't thought of it like that. But I suppose it could be like that with the gay sun son. That society has lifted the taboo that you not make anyone gay be bad or...idek. But crazily enough I always wondered this while watching 24 about terrorists and how they honestly often WERE Arab on the show. What's the deal?
Okay, true. She did have that amazing speech.

This has been on my list of things to try! BUT ALAS, the construction guys knocked our cable/internet out at home and nobody can come look at it until Thursday, so it'll have to wait. T said: "What are we supposed to do until then, read books?"
He was kidding, although I was in bed and dead asleep last night by ten o'clock, so maybe only mostly.
Bah, T sounds like my kids! Well more like N, who is like OMG WE HAVE NO INTERNET FOR FIVE MINUTES, I WILL DIE RIGHT NOW. The drama, the drama. I'm sorry you don't have internet though. I wouldn't even notice if we didn't have cable unless it happened to be Friday.
I mean, give the show a try? There's nothing to ship really, given that the ex-husband dude is a gross lech (and the fact that he played Captain Wentworth in my fav version of Persuasion isn't helping any by way of comparison), but both Sigourney Weaver and Carla Gugino are awesome, and the show passes the Bechdel test, if only briefly!
Idk. Almost nothing can make me watch TV for more than thirty seconds now, and this did.
POLITICAL ANIMALS. It does have a lot going on in it, but ZOMG SIGOURNEY WEAVER IS SO FUCKING AMAZING I CAN'T EVEN also she's fucking gorgeous I LOVE HER SO MUCH OK SHE'S THE BEST and Ellen Burstyn is so great, too!!! And Carla Gugino! BASICALLY I LOVE ALL THE LADIES.
Ellen Burstyn is killing it so hardcore. Every single time she shows up onscreen I burst out laughing. The gay sun son kind of breaks my heart though, because I feel as if he's falling apart at the seams and it messes with my momness. And Elaine's face when she was telling Susan about how hard it was for her son . . . GAH. They're just awesome. Also, I just realized I have no idea when it's actually on, and thus no idea when to check Hulu for a new ep!
I look forward to hearing what you think! I know it's so left-leaning and all that good stuff that a great number of people are bound to hate it (I realize this number does not include you). But it's nice to see people who can actually act all doing so together.

Excellent. Probably that means it will go up on Hulu Monday, not that I use Hulu enough to know these things. But I'll find out!

But it figures. And it's probably a good thing, because as I said, it's not a show I could see lasting anyway.
