from Wikipedia, the definition of flame war:

When the discussion becomes heated and sides do nothing more than complain and not accept each other's differences in point of view, the discussion degenerates into what is called a flame war. To flame someone means to go off-topic and attack the person rather than their opinion. Likely candidates for ( Read more... )

Hi! I know this isn't the exactly the best place to inquire about it, but I wasn't sure if you were having problems with receiving PMs or something. I'm wondering if you ever did get the PM I sent you? Or have pondered it enough to give me an answer. I can re-send if you never got it or something. :)

Thanks.

I disagree with a lot of my favorite people, but I respect their opinions and try to understand why they believe what they believe.

It's really crossing a line when people are rude and talk down to others, though. We don't really need that in this fandom, particularly considering that the canon texts are about understanding and even empathizing with others, even if one ultimately disagrees about the actions others may or may not take.

I guess I must have missed something? Oh well, this is one of those times when being sickly kept me out of a snark-fest ;)

As was said above, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and we should respect them, it doesn't mean they should become target-for-a-day because they choose to post something of their own personal opinion :O

My experience is that the place where almost all internet discussion degenerate into flame wars is when people stop discussing the topic and start discussing the motivations of others involved in the conversation.

My suggestion is this: If a conversation is getting too heated for you, and you want to walk away. WALK AWAY. Just that. Just walk away. No one will notice, no will complain, no one will call you on it.

Do NOT announce you are walking away and then blame the other person. In other words: Don't Flounce.

There is nothing to be gained ever by telling someone else that they are responsible for your actions. No one in the history of humanity has ever been convinced by that kind of argument. It really serves no purpose except to give the person flouncing the feeling that they got the last word in, and getting the last word is so not the pointJust own your own actions, and don't try to justify them by telling someone else what they are doing. That just makes it personal, and just invites the other person to discuss, ( ... )

I just used argument ad hominem in a paper today* And then I get home and BAM there it is again, in its nefarious fandom state. The world is a weird place.

I apologize for this is off topic, and I will stop nerding out now.

(lol I didn't actually make one, but the concept came up in analysis)
