I'm not sure it's so much a destiny (sorry, I really hate the way that destiny is used in the show to remove free choice from an individual) as it is Lee finally feeling strong enough in himself to strike out on his own and stop trying to please other people, or make his father feel proud of him. He feels he needs to do it because he now wants to please - and be proud - of himself, which is perfectly reasonable without bringing destiny in to it.

Having said that, I think given that he's talking to Kara and when he's talking to Kara, talking in terms of destinies as a way to explain it does make some sense. I'm still not convinced that politics is Lee's destiny though.

Beautifully said. Can't agree more. One of my favourite Lee/Kara scene because it sums their relationship and their journey so well. I don't think it could be truly understood without knowing their history. The scene got me so excited for season 4 and I still can't believe that we got nothing after that.

agreed! I don't know that I would want Lee to have a full-on destiny, or that he would want that, but I think it's the best way he has to explain that feeling of, he's making a solid choice to create a future for himself, rather than doing something because he feels (rightly or wrongly) that he has to do it for damage control. I mean, I do definitely love that he went into politics, but I don't think that means it has to be destiny? I think it was a good choice.

I agree with everything you've said, but this I love most of all:

I think he relates this path that he's on to destiny because its Kara he's speaking with. If anyone could understand the determination and pull of a life altering choice its her. Sometimes a choice can feel like destiny and that doesn't have to mean you give up free will, it just means in your heart and mind you know there is no other option to take. This was the role you were born to play and you accept it regardless of how hard the journey may be. I think Lee has that revelation in this episode and the only person who could have understood how he felt was Kara.

I love the idea that making the right choice can feel like destiny. Beautifully put!

It's strange to hear Lee speak about Destiny because on the surface he is the only one from the main characters who seems to not have one. But it's a great scene and at least for me it's the beginning of his journey to his own destiny, or more to the point it's second part. I say this because i see Lee as having a two-sided story involving the destiny story line just as he has with the whole military/civilian thing.
He is practically there from beginning to end with Kara, Laura, even Bill thought their destiny driven journeys. None of those paths are his, but you can't take him out of the equation completely either.

If we are to believe that he has a destiny of his own i think that it starts after DB2. and sadly we didn't get to see that part.

anyway, did i mentioned that i love the scene?
