The Reiki Symbols

An interesting, dissenting opinion regarding the Reiki symbols. The way I was taught, the symbols (which have been published in books and all over the Internets) are not secret, as Reiki itself is passed through the attunement--NOT through the teaching of the symbols

Sort of like in Feri. but the names and stuff are secret. The exercises are not the tradition, they just help you get there, but it must be passed to one by one who has it...

I see Reiki as another sort of mystery tradition. I don't know how it works or why, but know that it does work.

I almost never use the standard Kanji. I have a language in my soul that seems to work better for me.

There's an interesting passage in another section of the site where the teacher says that if you work the current sufficiently, after awhile you can use the Reiki without the symbols at all--simply with intent. I have found this to be the case and I will explain my own theory as to why at some point down the road.

When I was first trained, I was told the symbols were sacred and therefore kept secret to be kept from "profane eyes" And I was told that most times the symbols were not written down during class, they had to be memorized and the paper returned to the teacher.

I suspect a lot of this had to do with the entire control/mystisque gig that Mrs. Tanaka had going. To be a Reiki Master also cost you $10K.

I have to agree-unless you are attuned, they are just symbols. You can't use them for anything. They are imprinted on your consciousness through the process of attunement. You can get an attunement and no training and still "have" the symbols.

I have been attuned but had almost no training for my level II. Interestingly enough I have never been able to really commit the symbols to memory and don't use them. However, I am able to use reiki just fine including skills that are level II.

Thanks for sharing that--it's further proof that what matters is the laying on of hands that passes the current to you, not the details of the symbols.
