I'd be a little nervous putting either turpentine or mineral spirits into anything I wanted to not peel down to the wood, so I'd vote for the oil and beeswax approach! I haven't looked up furniture polish recipes, but the thought of putting the same stuff I use for getting all the leftover stain out of the brushes onto a finished piece of wood gives me the heebiejeebies. Whoever came up with that recipe is a braver soul than I am anyhow!

The turpentine likely works as an emulsifier and binds the wax and oil together and maybe makes it easier to spread once it cools without having to over-oil the mixture? Maybe?

You know what defeats me every goddamn time with socks? Heel stitch.

You could make the Houdini socks from Twist Collective?
