pairing name conventions and pairings

So I was thinking about pairing name conventions and being annoyed at the younger fans because I am allowed after five years, as long as I don't actually hurt them. The thing is that a lot of W-fen come into JP fandoms and -- I know what I am talking about, because I did the same damn thing -- don't understand the logic of the pairing name ( Read more... )

Okay, wanted to comment, so really quick, I've always used the "/" and the "x" interchangeably. Though I lean towards the latter, because when I got into 'ficcing the "/" was used mostly for slash as a holdover from the old W-fen system, I think. (It is, after all, how the term "slash" was derived.) So I went with the x. Plus, generally, I don't write yaoi, shonen ai, or slash, and it's not like ExT didn't engrain it in me that that's how you do it. >__> And I've also seen SxS a lot for Sakura x Syaoran (She really DOES go first, huh? Weird. It's probably because she's actually the more dominant personality, being the main character. ^^;) but this might be a by-product of ExT, actually ( ... )

Very true about ExT brainwashing us (oh, when we were little fanbabies ourselves! How cute we were then! How precious and naive! Thinking back on those times, I just want....to take down everything I wrote then. God, I was bad. Why didn't anyone say?!) with that 'x'. I, too, use it for just about every pairing.

That / is just too awkward, being so close to the period and aposthrophe and all. I never get it on the first go.

I have to agree with something dkellis said - I've never understood the difference between / and x in fics, and when I do pairing ones usually just use the slash mark, regardless of how serious it is. I also tend to put the names purely in the order of how I think they sound or look better, rather than who's pitching/receiving. Although I may start doing it your way now, cos it kind of makes sense (why did noone ever tell me this before ( ... )

I dislike the way they mash the names together, for example (off the top of my head) Snarry for SnapexHarry. Some of them sound completely retarded :(

I never knew there was a difference between / and x, so I use them interchangably. I got the difference in naming really fast after I accidentaly said EdxRoy from FMA, and my slash friend went "Say WHAT?!". Beyond that, I tend to use the x just because it's easier to type, the / is so awkward, I have to look down to hit it right. I also use the -> for UST or one sided, just because I learned it and it makes sense.

O.O You know, I never really knew any of that? My intro to fanfiction was through the X-Files and there / just meant a romantic pairing. Any gay or straight pairing and it didn't matter who was pitching. When I hit CCS the x sort of threw me, but I figured it meant about the same. And I always thought that the name/name was just...you know...whatever sounded best. I never thought that writing Watanuki/Doumeki meant that Watanuki would be pitching.

Hmmm...Watanuki pitching...
