worst fan ever

Talking to vikki reminds me -- I have yet to see EVA. (Mostly because I've heard it's depressing and nihilistic and I can think of better things to do with my time than watch some idiot teenager sit alone in a room with his head in his hands ( Read more... )

Oh God. I watched four episodes of Marmalade Boy and then COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE. Kodocha, though? Such good crack. Babbit! Sana raps! Oh yes.

Slayers is. . . um. If you didn't watch it in middle school, you've probably missed your window of opportunity to actually enjoy it. I'm sure that if I watched Slayers now, I'd try to slit my throat over the subpar animation and stereotypical character personalities.

Eva, though? You should probably watch Eva. Because it's, you know, one of those anime that, like Cowboy Bebop, redefined the genre. It's one of those anime that Changed People's Lives. Plus, the director was clinically depressed at the time and the anime is really just one long allegory for his angst! You don't get much more pretentious than that.

See, I didn't watch an awful lot of Bebop, either.

Me, I can be clinically depressed without any help, so I tend to go for stuff I know is going to have a nominally happy ending.

I watched all of Marmalade Boy in about...4 days. Lots of fast-fowarding was involved, though I don't think my brain has still recovered from it, and this binge occured probably...in 2001?

I can't stand Eva. Kododcha is mind-blowingly random and great. And I'm not sure just how many IQ points I lost off of Wedding Peach, but it was probably for the worst. XD

Oh well, who really cares about mainstream anime anyway? Most of the fandoms for all of them are plauged with scary fangirls and fanboys, and probably aren't worth the time anyway.

Eva has a happy ending! . . . sort of. I don't know, it's all very confusing and nihilistic.

You're probably better off with the crack shoujo, then. Like Kodocha. Kodocha Kodocha Kodocha. Did you know it's been licensed? AT LAST, I CAN SEE MY CRACK ON DVD QUALITY.

My difficulty is I like the mainstream stuff before they become mainstream. ;_; I remember when the Inuyasha fandom wasn't a scary place.

I've seen a grand total of, like, seven Slayers episodes. And one of the movies. I couldn't tell you a damn thing about it, even if I know the characters due to general fandom knowledge. I've never seen any of Robotech or Macross with the sole exception of Macross Plus (and the only reason I watched that was because of a Top Gun AMV I saw, plus I have this soft spot for pilots/dogfighting). I've never seen Sailor Moon, I've never seen Ghost in the Shell... Wow, I've got a long list of never-seens. XD

The fact that you're all into shoujo but hardly watch shounen really reminds me of one of my IRL friends. She's a HUGE shoujo fan, but only really watches shounen because I like it. I'm the other way... I LOVE me my shounen anime, but I don't go out of the way for teh shoujo. Even if it IS very shiny.

Don't watch Eva. That's... what, fourteen hours of my life I'll never get back? Oh, wait. I watched ( ... )

Don't watch Eva.

I second that non-recommendation. I only watched Eva because it was big and important and so I could say I'd done it, and until then I hadn't realized it was possible violently hate a series that I found mind-numbingly boring. I mean, I understood all the genre-chaning stuff, and I'll give it a certain amount of respect for that, but the series itself? I could have handled hating 90% of the chracters, or all the meaningless Christian symbolism, or the director working through his depression by making all the chracters tragically angtsy, or the fact that the entire plot is pointless--well, I could have handled one of those things, but all of them in the same series? RAGE. Just find some plot summaries and read them, read the Eva Faq so you know what's going on, and call it a day. If you need to watch crazy-mecha anime, watch RahXephon instead.

I, too, have never seen Slayers, or Ranma 1/2 or Sailor Moon or large chunks of the Gundam series or any anime produced before 1995, really. To tell the truth, I'm a few ( ... )

So, er, yeah. Sometimes it's really not worth the effort. Watch what you want, not what you think you should be watching.

Amen. Just, worlds of amen. :D

Eh. I really liked Eva. I don't think that it's anywhere near as "depressing" as its reputation implies, though. I mean, it's Anno, so there's crack...but it's pretty much the shounen version of Karekano, I think? As in, Hahahaha Crazy High School Antics Hahahahaha I HATE MY FATHER WHY AM I LIVING. ....with robots. So, uh, it's kind of like a cross between Karekano and FLCL, in a way ( ... )

Going against the majority opinion here to say that I loved Eva. It was angsty yes, and Shinji took 90% of the series to grow a spine, but it's the coolest mindf*ck that I've ever had (Tried watching Lain before, which was a mindf*ck that made me try to kill myself in a bad way). I liked the characters and the way they tended to bounce off of each other, and I personally enjoyed the philosophical aspect of the series (ie the "Why am I here? Why do I exist?" stuff). It was cool and uh, there's a really cute penguin. ^^; Plus, Shinji's seiyuu can scream like nobody's business. I have odd standards...

But yes, seconding the recommendation to read the manga. It's different from the anime, but is still awesome nonetheless.

That's my two cents, please don't kill me. >>

Oh, and if you DO watch the anime, Kaworu's seiyuu humming "Ode to Joy" in the key of Q (which coincidentally, does not exist)? Hilarious.

I'd say watch Evangelion just once, in order to judge whether or not you'll like it.

Because really, it's entirely unpredictable what anyone's reaction will be. (Myself, I thought it was mediocre at best, but my friends are evenly split between thinking that it's the best anime ever and the worst anime ever.)

But I'll still stick it onto a list of recommended anime, because even though I think it's not very good, there are so many references/tributes/parodies to it in other anime that it deserves a place in "must-watch". Otherwise there'll have to be endless liner notes on what all those Evangelion references are.

I watch pretty much anything if it has cute girls in it. (And assuming it moves along at a reasonable pace, unlike most shounen series.)
