Talking to
vikki reminds me -- I have yet to see EVA. (Mostly because I've heard it's depressing and nihilistic and I can think of better things to do with my time than watch some idiot teenager sit alone in a room with his head in his hands

I've seen a grand total of, like, seven Slayers episodes. And one of the movies. I couldn't tell you a damn thing about it, even if I know the characters due to general fandom knowledge. I've never seen any of Robotech or Macross with the sole exception of Macross Plus (and the only reason I watched that was because of a Top Gun AMV I saw, plus I have this soft spot for pilots/dogfighting). I've never seen Sailor Moon, I've never seen Ghost in the Shell... Wow, I've got a long list of never-seens. XD
The fact that you're all into shoujo but hardly watch shounen really reminds me of one of my IRL friends. She's a HUGE shoujo fan, but only really watches shounen because I like it. I'm the other way... I LOVE me my shounen anime, but I don't go out of the way for teh shoujo. Even if it IS very shiny.
Don't watch Eva. That's... what, fourteen hours of my life I'll never get back? Oh, wait. I watched it twice. That's twenty-eight hours. (I watched it in Japanese and it hurt my head, I was hoping the English dub would clear things up a bit. Some, but not enough for my liking.) GAH. ANGST DEPRESSION AND MORE ANGST. I cheered when people started getting killed off.

I second that non-recommendation. I only watched Eva because it was big and important and so I could say I'd done it, and until then I hadn't realized it was possible violently hate a series that I found mind-numbingly boring. I mean, I understood all the genre-chaning stuff, and I'll give it a certain amount of respect for that, but the series itself? I could have handled hating 90% of the chracters, or all the meaningless Christian symbolism, or the director working through his depression by making all the chracters tragically angtsy, or the fact that the entire plot is pointless--well, I could have handled one of those things, but all of them in the same series? RAGE. Just find some plot summaries and read them, read the Eva Faq so you know what's going on, and call it a day. If you need to watch crazy-mecha anime, watch RahXephon instead.
I, too, have never seen Slayers, or Ranma 1/2 or Sailor Moon or large chunks of the Gundam series or any anime produced before 1995, really. To tell the truth, I'm a few fandoms where I haven't seen the series yet, but have picked up the basics from discussion/fics/whatever. Then again, I'm finding out that a lot of anime fans haven't seen a lot of 'classics'--we all seem to get by on "common knowledge", the stuff everyone knows about a series even if they've never seen it.
A lot of the time I don't think it's worth the bother. I mean, I've never read War and Peace, and I could take time out of my life to sit down and read it and probably end up hating Tolstoy, or I could re-read L.A. Confidential again like I want to and be happy.
So, er, yeah. Sometimes it's really not worth the effort. Watch what you want, not what you think you should be watching.
