After 15 minutes of staring at the paperwork on his desk, with the intention of trying to make a dent in it, Bobby would welcome any distraction. Then the phone ring. He looked at it for a moment, almost suspicious that the distraction had come so quickly after his thoughts about distractions.
But the squadroom was empty, and he picked up the phone anyway, "Detective Goren, Major Case."
"Det. Goren? This is Clive Witherspoon, I'm a court officer out in Nassau County...we're s'posed to have the Brynn Fairfax trial startin' here today...Judge asked me to call yous guys...she, uh, didn't show up for her trial."
"She was out on bail, Detective...she didn't show up...her lawyer says he don't know what's goin' on...Judge said to call yous guys and tell you to go search her place, see if she's there an' whatnot...."
Casey walked into her office to find that her phone was ringing. "Novak," she answered. The voice on the other line surprised her; she had a friend from law school who was a prosecutor in Nassau County, but they had barely kept up since graduation. He did not spend any time on pleasantries...saying that he knew she would want to know. "She what?" He went on hastily. "Thanks, David...we'll do lunch, no really, we will this time..." and with a few more parting words, she hung up. Without hesitation, headed for Alex's office.
