So...Castiel...

I probably have made no secret of my dislike for Castiel, but I'm wondering...why DO people like him? He doesn't seem to have much personality or personal storyline and I find him very...bland. The best guess I can come up with is that people think he's pretty and are making up fanon for him, but I'm sure that's only true for a small section of ( Read more... )

I don't really understand his innocence though. He's been around for around 2000 years, if Anna is to be believed because she knew them before she was sent to Earth. In all that time, he hasn't even sat down to watch The Real World or something? I mean, has he ignored humans this entire time?

Those few times he does have a personality, his personality seems to be dick with superiority complex... Sending Dean to hell because he's not listening? Demanding they give him Anna without even a reason? Telling them to leave the town they were blowing up or else? Treating Sam like the redheaded step-child? PRETENDING TO BE BOBBY?

But why wouldn't he think about it? While the angels may not have free will, it doesn't mean they can't have their own thoughts. They have to or how would they realize they were unhappy or how they should act to serve God and His people the best? He's not a robot, he has a mind. What kind of angel doesn't think about God's people ( ... )

From the interviews I've seen, I quite like Misha and am excited for his panel at the convention this weekend. I mostly have issues with Castiel as a character. I love the new storyline too, he's just very grating on me.

To be honest, I don't find him that attractive. He's just not my type, though I think Misha is cuter than Castiel if that makes any sense.

Well, he is pretty, but he's also mysterious, badass, and is beginning to have inner conflict ("I don't know what's right and what's wrong anymore.") Also, as someone said, his confusion when it comes to human behavior is adorable. There's an extended version of his first appearance where Dean says that he'll ask again who Castiel is, and Castiel looks at him with this confused-little-kid look and says in a slightly clueless way, "I already told you: I'm an angel of the Lord." They should have kept it in there.

I really like canon Castiel, but I try to stay away from fanon Castiel because they make him too innocent, and they think he's never heard of sex at all and try to make him something out of a Precious Moments prayer card. He's not innocent really, but he's definitely unfamiliar with Earth and its inhabitants, and I think he's intrigued by them.

I think maybe my adverse reaction to his inner conflict is that it's too inner. Like, we hardly get to see it, and it doesn't feel like he's made any progress, just gotten...dickier since the first time he threatened to send Dean to hell. Which, classy. I thought his cluelessness in Lazarus Rising was adorable, but since then, it's less "what does this button do?" and more "Do this or die. And yes, I can threaten you from all the way down here, what of it ( ... )
