Sorry to hear about the carpal tunnel and other health problems.
Completely agreed about Dresden and yes, I think you should write Jim Butcher.
As for advice for 8th graders: establish rules immediately, remember that their bodies are changing and brains frequently get put on back burner. My dad says that he has changed his method for teaching Confirmation class as a progressive format doesn't work because even those who have all been through classes haven't retained the same info. So, instead teach through associations, especially ones that apply to their daily lives.

That's great about your job, and Ben. Sorry about the carpal tunnel and grafts. I haven't gone to the dentist in a while, and am dreading it because I know my gums are in pretty bad shape. And yes, I know that just means I shouldn't be putting it off. And I'm not, at least not on purpose.
Good luck with CCD. Keeping order in the middle school classrooms when I was substitute teaching was as much luck as anything else. Remember that it's easier to get nicer as the year progresses than stricter, though I wouldn't expect you to have the same problems with discipline that one has in a regular classroom...

I taught 6th grade CCD once, years ago. Um, good luck. I don't have any useful advice... I don't think I'm cut out to teach middle school kids.
