How I managed to gain yet another identity

As well as Lauren, laurenhat, robot flowerpot, and all the rest, I have unintentionally become Sara. or maybe Sarah. I don't know.

There's a new little greasy cafe place across the street from my house. I've been there a few times, once with imvfd. They always seem to know me, far more than I would expect given that I'm not really a regular customer, but I'd been figuring they're just really friendly, or have very impressive memories, or something.

The other morning, when I was really sleepy, I went to grab a muffin or a bagel or something, and the girl behind the counter greeted me with, "Hello, Sir!" She has an accent, and I decided she must still be learning her English forms of address. I smiled blearily and said hi. I plopped down for a moment while my pastry was being fetched, and when it was ready, she called me. "Here you go, Sara!" Oh, it wasn't "sir" after all. Hmm. I stood there for a moment, confused, but then left without correcting her. I wondered who Sara was.

I'm still wondering. Today while walking past the place, I was having a sneezing fit, and I stopped in to grab a handful of napkins. "Hello, Sara, how are you?" I was welcomed enthusiastically.

"Um... " (sneeze) "... fine."

"Do you want your usual breakfast?"

"No, I just needed some napkins today."

"Okay. How are classes going, Sara?"

"Good."

"You're in pyschology, right?"

At this point I started wondering if I had, in fact, talked to her a bunch while in a somnambulistic state and just couldn't remember it. Maybe I'd even introduced myself as Sara, for some unknown reason. Given my dreams, that wouldn't be all that strange. Perhaps next she'd ask me if I'd been to the Cheesecake Factory over in the giant Bullwinkle J. Moose head. "Yes, I am --"

"And then you're going to be a nurse!"

"Er... no. Maybe a professor."

"After your masters?"

"PhD."

She looked quite set to argue with me. As I took my napkins and fled, she said, "You have a good day, Sara! It's so nice having you come in and talk to me here all the time!"

I wonder if Sara will be confused next time she comes in and gets asked about her PhD program, and informed that she doesn't actually want to be a nurse. I'm jealous of her. At least she gets to keep her real name.
