of PACs, politics, and parties

Strangely, given my dislike of mingling with crowds of strangers, my loathing of making phone calls to strangers, my irritation at most phone calls that I receive from people I don't know, and my general disinclination to host things, I am thinking of hosting a MoveOn.org party on 3/2 to gather Obama supporters together and phone people in Texas to ( Read more... )

I was vaguely surprised to see that MoveOn was getting involved in this particularly primary battle, so I went to their website to see if they talked about their reasons.

According to the website of the famously net-savvy MoveOn.org, current issues they are working on include:

* Firing Karl Rove

* Firing Tom DeLay

and

* Who should replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court

According to their press page, they have had no new press releases since September 2006.

And no, I was able to find no explanation or discussion of their choosing to endorse Obama.

Hoo boy. That's net savvy right there, all right. *grimace*

MoveOn polled their members about the Democratic candidates a few times. I don't believe there was a strong favorite when Edwards was still in the race. After he dropped out, they polled everyone again and said if either candidate got at least 2/3 of the vote (I believe that was the threshold) then they'd endorse that candidate. Or maybe they also polled everyone about whether they should officially make an endorsement. I don't recall. But anyway, that's how it happened, to the extent that I know it.

OT: I just recently ran across Big Bunny cartoons. Now I am enlightened!

Mostly they were to WA because it seemed that a lot of Washingtonian democrats didn't realize that only the caucus would count toward the nomination (even though they had a primary too). I also made a few calls to Nebraska, but once people I reached started telling me that they had just returned home from their caucus I stopped ( ... )

Thanks, this seems like really good advice! And it's useful to hear about your experiences. I've decided to go ahead and host the party, and I'm looking forward to it.
