The reason they do that is because it's illegal for them to enforce that section of the contract, but they feel they have good odds of convincing you that it's valid just because you signed it. It's kind of like how overdraft fees work. It's not legal to include something in a contract that stipulates the penalties for breaking the contract; that's the whole point of having a court system. Likewise, there's no point in writing a contract that gives one party unlimited freedom to change the contract otherwise they would just decide that the contract says you need to give Wyndam your wallet and your kidneys. That clause is there so that later when they try to pull some bullshit they have something point to and say "no, you agreed to this so just pack your things and leave quietly and we'll call it even." When really they know that they have absolutely no authority to do that, but that you'll be to intimidated to fight back.
