Who: Kid Jim and OPEN What Catherine ignores her hiatus for a sly log before the australians arrive. Tiny Jim hangs out on deck in the snow When: During the flood Where: Out on deck Warnings: None likely
Jim wasn't even close to being as oblivious to Eddie's presence as the other boy was to his. The sudden arrival of the small, fast moving shadow that darted across the deck to his side was impossible for him to ignore, and by the time Edward was at the railings, Jim had jerked away slightly and was staring openly at the strange looking boy before him.
After a moment, it occurred to him that he might have been expected to respond to Edwards exclamation in some way, so he forced himself to look back at the stars, trying to resist the urge to steal more glances at the boy beside him, "Uh, yeah. It's... Wow."
Jim closed his hands around the top bar of the railing, and let his eyes slide back towards Edward. He didn't get to see too many other boys his age, so he wasn't entirely sure how he was supposed to act. Maybe if he could keep the Oklahoma twang out of his accent, he could just copy whatever the other boy did, and seem normal.
Jim followed the other boys lead, sliding down to his knees so that snow chilled the line of his calf, soaking through into his scuffed cotton pants. "Yeah. Really cool." Jim replied softly, trying to mirror Edward's tone, trying to ape his accent convincingly.
He was barely looking at the stars now, merely studying the boy at his side. The old and worn clothes went entirely unnoticed under the hat and jumper ensconcing Eddie. After a careful, contemplative pause, Jim asked: "Uh, what's a supernova though?"
His accent bled through inescapably, and he mentally chastised himself for the slip.
Sheo didn't like his new toy. The magic had completely worn off of the "remote controlled car"...or the snow had made sure it wouldn't function properly. Either way, he was upset and frustrated, choosing instead to throw the contraption over the railing. That seemed like the better idea.
But he would have to be dramatic about it. With a running start, he charged to the railing, the car up above his head and then, with a great heave, tossed it over the side. He laughed triumphantly, pulling a cookie from where he had hoarded them each time that he found some. Consequently, he had a decently sized stash of stale and faintly lint flavored cookies, but he didn't mind them. It gave them personality.
He leaned over the railing, cookie in his mouth, and watched until he couldn't see the car any longer. "Perfect!" he exclaimed and skipped away, only to pause when he sensed another person.
Jim hadn't been expecting anything like the dramatic performance that Sheo put on of flinging the car out into deep space. Initially he'd shied away from the act, but as the car glided off into the stars, and Sheogorath skipped around, he felt himself relaxing somewhat. It was a performance, a science fiction about launching tiny people on an intergalactic mission through space. He watched the car for a while, before noticing the movement in the other boy stilling, and jerking his head back towards him.
For a moment, he just stared at Sheogorath, almost waiting for the other boy to begin another act, before it occurred to him that things didn't always work like that and this might have been the real world, which meant he needed to say something really.
Sheogorath paused, looking down to the other man with a kind of calm confidence that shouldn't be present in a body as small as his. He was also on the verge of movement, his body in a constant state of judging whether he should run or turn circles. Run or turn circles. He forced his feet to be still.
"What was? The car? I don't know. It sucked." That was a word he had never used in his life but...he didn't even seem to notice it now.
"What are you doing there, lad?" He laughed, because that was hilarious.
Jim kept his hands curled loosely around the top of the railings, despite no longer showing the least bit of interest in looking out at the stars any longer, his attention was now entirely occupied by the other boy. "No, not the car. Throwing it was good. It was good to watch." He tapped his fingers along the barrier, and smiled, because laughing was good, and listening to the other boy laugh made him feel good.
"I weren't doing nothing." He replied to the latter question quickly, because you weren't always supposed to be staring at things that didn't concern you, and Jim was not entirely sure that the stars concerned him.
