One of Aleera's most favourite things to do was literally flying around the ship like a cosmic, bat-winged dolphin. It wasn't that there was any sort of wake she followed. She just loved the freedom of zipping around it and, from time to time, finding someone out on deck to swoop over suddenly and scare the living daylights out of with mischievous giggling.
But who she spied nearing the edge... Who she saw nearing the edge of railing... Who she saw removing shoes...
Hurtling towards her, like dragon after diving fish, the flame-haired vampiress could not let this happen. It wasn't that the girl would die. No. The consequences of falling over the edge were far wider-reaching than that. A darting shape of red and grey, spearing through the air with knife-like grace.
It had been so easy to drop once she'd let go, and there was the wind now, racing past her as she fell and nothing ever came closer. Space must be as high up as you could get, right? She couldn't think of anything better, anything - anyone - else would hurt too much.
But then there was something slamming into her, a sudden stop, and - "No. No no no."
But Aleera's tone was aggravated. Even a little pissed off, yet reserved. Lua was gripped in vice-like hands and she flew up with a flap of leathery wings, rising in altitude before she could deposit her, once more, on the deck. It took only moments for the change to be upon her and Aleera landed on feet, looking like the women in pink and white silks she so often did.
Of course it would be her. It was always her, in the way of everything. Lua went limp, like she'd ran out of air and drowned, anything to weigh herself down and slip out of her fingers, but she'd been dropped on deck before she could free herself.
She stared back at those words in fear and confusion and something like disappointment. What was this now?

And catching her.
