David's silent as Bourne carries his cage. After the second day, he hasn't had much to say period. Except when he's woken up screaming from the nightmares. Otherwise, he's just tried to ignore the warden's existence. It was too much to think about him. To think at all. Better to lose himself in the rat. Rats couldn't feel rage or despair.

The is the first time Bourne's picked up his cage. So it's enough to get his attention. The rat's frightened, picking a corner of the cage and huddling there anxiously. Its fear is infectious, but David's indifferent to fear at this point. If Bourne killed him now, it would just be a welcome release. Not that he would. He even begged him to, halfway through the second day. The bastard never answered him, of course.

Where was he taking him? David didn't know and didn't care to think about it. Probably to show him off to the other wardens. The thought was too bitter to contemplate, and he pushed it away, hiding back behind the rat brain again.

Costigan arrived at David's room shortly after Bourne. He glanced one way down the hall and then the other, ensuring that no prying eyes were watching before he pressed his fingers around the handle to allow himself into the other inmate's room. He was pleased that his friend was already there. He was less pleased that David was still a rat in a cage, panicked by the look of it, and that the warden seemed to show no awareness of or remorse for that fact.

The former undercover stepped silently inside and closed the door behind him, leaving the lock undone. Then he stepped forward, hands sliding safely into his pockets. It was a comfortable posture for him. It left him looking unassuming and nonthreatening and gave his fingers a chance to idle without appearing as anxious as he often felt.

"Let's do this," he offered as his first words, cutting past small talk. He didn't need an ability to know the rage Bourne would still be feeling or the discomfort David would endure. This was an unpleasant situation all around.

"Yeah," the former asset said, and set the cage down on the floor. He opened the small wire door in the side of it to let the rat out.

"Okay, David," he said. "Out of the cage. Time to demorph." It would be better if David freed himself from the form instead of some higher power doing it automatically, he thought. It might do something about that feeling of not being in control - a feeling he knew a bit too well.

So he was a little sorry for doing this to the kid, but mostly he was still pissed.

David freezes when Bourne bends down to open the cage, shrinking back from his hand. The rat's in control, and it doesn't care about looking weak or afraid. When it sees the cage door open, it's first thought is to flee, and it's halfway towards doing exactly that before David stops it.

Bourne wants him out of the cage. Why? To taunt him about being trapped, that had to be it. He's never doubted for a moment this is anything but a life sentence. So he stays right where he is. Not moving. Certainly not saying anything to Bourne, what's there to say?

Slowly, David backs up to the other side of the cage again. Maybe Bourne wants to play a game of stomp-the-rat. He can't stop him, but that doesn't mean he'll make it easy for him. His tiny dark eyes never look away from Bourne.
