Who: Jonathan Crane, Hayley Stark When: In the evening after the flood end. Where: Crane's cabin. What: Hayley finally admits she kind of almost misses Crane as a friend. Warnings: None.
Crane had opened the door, fully expecting to see Eames or Nygma standing there. Or maybe even Capa, confronting him about the content of their last conversation. The last person he expected to see was Hayley. And the last thing he expected to hear was an apology.
"What?" Crane just looked confused. This was probably some sort of trap, he decided after a seconds pause. This seemed like the kind of thing that Hayley would do. But on the other hand, Hayley knew an awful lot about him. That leverage was still there.
"Hayley, what are you talking about?" Crane continued, looking out into the corridor to see if there was anyone else around.
"I'm sorry," she repeated firmly, though her gaze dropped to the floor. After a beat, she looked up at him again, taking a deep breath to continue speaking the words that were so very painful. Talking to Crane in general had been difficult for so long. Now, trying to make amends, she was utterly terrified that he would mock her or try to hold leverage above her instead of accepting her back as a friend -- mostly because she might have deserved it, in a way.
"I.. want to be friends again. Real friends. I know how I've been and everything we've talked about and been through, but.. Obviously we're still talking, right? That has to mean something." It was a poor argument and she knew it. Hayley was just scrambling for anything to cling to, to convince him that he should accept her back, even though she still wouldn't accept what he had done.
"Look, Hayley. I'm not entirely sure what you want." Crane said, as he took a slight step back. He hadn't imagined that Hayley would be a complete turn around like this. So much so that he didn't think it was likely there wasn't some alternate agenda here. It seemed likely that Hayley still wanted revenge over that Rex incident. She seemed like the type to wait.
"If this is part of some plan..." Crane started, but trailed off. Hayley didn't seem to be lying. But then again, Hayley was probably a good liar. After a second or two of thought, he decided that it would just be best to wait it out. To see what Hayley tried to do next.
Hayley shifted uncomfortably, dropping her eyes again. This was not going as planned. It wasn't that she had some idea of how this might be exactly, but she knew that it wasn't like this. Crane wasn't supposed to accuse her of having an agenda. She wasn't supposed to still be out in the hall. Partially out of desperation and partially in a sincere effort for him to trust her, she lifted her eyes and spoke quietly. "I killed Harper. Here, on the Barge. It's why he hates me."
It wasn't the best blackmail, seeing as Capa already knew, but it was better than most of her friends had gotten and it could still damage her if he tried to use it against her. After a beat, she shifted again.
"Can I come in? Please?" The hysteric edge to her tone was sincere. Hayley hated being vulnerable.
