"...stopped?" Victor was wanting to ask Data why he'd stopped reading, but it seemed like the first few words had run away from him. It was pleasant, listening to Data's rhythmic voice read from the book that Victor thought he might have remembered. Lying in the hospital, with Data so very close was the furthest place in the world from that machine chair in the darkened room.

Which of course, inevitably reminded Victor of his face. He decided that he didn't want to know. Not just yet. He'd wait a few minutes or maybe even hours. It was better to be in this kind of half reality with Data reading, rather than to acknowledge what had happened.

He had wondered what Data was looking at as the book had been settled in his lap. Victor didn't want to look. He didn't want to turn his head and feel the press of bandages and the inevitable pain. It was better to stay as he was, and let Data tell him what was going on.

"Victor..." Data turned in surprise, chair squeaking across the floor as he faced him. And he didn't care that half his face was covered in bandages, for a split second all there could possibly be in the android's expression was relief and that gentleness, not a hint of horror ( ... )

Victor smiled back at Data, relieved to see that Data hadn't responded poorly to his appearance. Some part of him, at the very back of his mind, had been concerned that Data would blame him for what had happened. If Data thought that he'd been stupid enough not to tell someone what had been happening, so it was somehow Victor's fault.

The brief hand touch melted most of those thoughts. Victor glanced down at it and was about to squeeze back, when Data moved his hand up to the bar. Victor looked at it for a moment, wondering, before looking back up to Data's face.

"Thank you." Victor managed to say. His voice sounded oddly forced, as if he hadn't used it in a long while. Yet if Data had time to read with him, a great deal of time must have passed. Had they found Amanda? Was she safe? Had the man in the red coat been caught and the machine taken apart?

"Amanda... safe?" Victor managed to ask, looking up at Data with an expression of pain and concern. "Caught the man?"

Victor angled himself up to look at Howie, but didn't sit up. It was painful and he wasn't about to put more strain on his back than strictly necessary.

"Sergeant Howie." Victor sounds hoarse, but pleased. "It is good to see you."

A bit of coughing at the end there, but Victor does look very happy to see Howie despite it.

[Victor is contemplating eating, but concerned about the bandages on his face. And the surgery done to his back.]

[Face bandages make eating rather difficult, or so the Doctor has been told in the past by friends with bandages on their faces. Not that this has happened often, but still. And this time of day had left him yearning before, during his own death tolls.

And so it is that in a fit of completely irrational guilt, he shows up with an oops-proof thermos of just-warm-enough tea, and a straw. He can't remember if he's ever actually met Victor before, though he supposes in a place like this, it really doesn't matter. He quietly pulls a chair to the bedside and settles down, not really intending to tire the poor man out with conversation if he isn't looking for it, but there to keep company nonetheless, based on what he remembers of his own wishes in this condition. The thermos and straw are fiddled with and prepared, and he offers an awkward smile in case Victor might be awake and aware enough to receive it.]

[Victor senses that there's someone next to next to him and turns to see that it isn't Data. He spends a moment looking at the Doctor before determining that he's not Amanda. Which is pretty much all Victor's looking for at the moment.]

Hello. [He gives the Doctor a suitably awkward smile back. And also spends a second looking at the thermos and the straw trying to work out what it is. He eventually decides that its some kind of food container, but he's still boggling a bit at the straw.] We've spoken before. [He remembered that.]

So we have! [The agreement is jovial, and somewhat relieved. He recognises the odd look, having seen it often enough from Erimem, and his same delighted smile meets it as he holds the thermos up. It had always been great fun to explain newfangled things to her, though he's more accustomed to being plied with questions than simply reading a look- he can't help but feel a little accomplished for catching it this time.]

It's a container of tea. I've made certain it isn't too hot, but I wasn't sure how you take it, so I've left it plain. I found it easy to settle my stomach with when I was kept here, and with your injuries, I've added a s- a tube to help you sip from it without having to use your hands. D'you take anything in your tea? Or would you like something else?

[Sveta was bustling around, as she usually did, checking her watch. She was just about to leave- as she had been there almost twelve hours- and decided that it was probably go to see Victor. She had been trying her hardest to take care of him, to make him comfortable, as she felt he had no reason to be here at all. He didn't deserve any of this.]

Victor. [Her voice was soft as she gently put a hand on his. She didn't want to startle him.]

[He woke up with a start, but relaxed when he realised that it was Sveta.] Sveta.

[It was good to feel her hand on his. Someone normal, not someone that he associated with what had happened yesterday. It had been good to just know that she was in the infirmary and to hear her working in the rooms nearby and occasionally talking to another infirmary member.] You are... [He trailed off before finishing the sentence. He'd wanted to ask if she was staying any longer.]

[Giving him a smile, she took the time to sit by his bedside.]

I am what? [Then, she paused.] Wait...don't say it. You just need to rest. I'm sorry if I woke you.

Psst!

[WHAT WAS THAT? Victor jumps in shock, and manages to knock his tray onto the floor. He swings around a see a head poking up. Act quick, Severen. You've got about two seconds before he shouts for Data.]

Hey, plant!

[And the tray falls to the floor. Severen doesn't pick it up, he just looks at Victor like he's an utter retard.]

Why the fuck did you do that?
