Victor angled himself up to look at Howie, but didn't sit up. It was painful and he wasn't about to put more strain on his back than strictly necessary.

"Sergeant Howie." Victor sounds hoarse, but pleased. "It is good to see you."

A bit of coughing at the end there, but Victor does look very happy to see Howie despite it.

Well, Victor didn't particularly want to know if he was getting better or not. That meant acknowledging what had happened to his face, which wasn't on Victor's to do list.

"It can only help." It certainly was unlikely to harm him. Although he wouldn't want Howie to give him his only Bible. "You have another?"

Victor didn't attempt to hide his look of surprise. He'd known that Sergeant Howie was a very moral man, but he hadn't expected him to be so well prepared in that way.

"I would like to borrow one." More reading material wouldn't hurt. "Do you offer these to many?"

Victor was beginning to wonder if Howie made a habit of handing them out.

"You are a kind man." It was true. Men with strength of character often did not possess the finer points of polite manners, according to Victor, but Sergeant Howie appeared to possess both. Victor was very impressed. "I am surprised that more of the barge does not follow your example."

Such as people like Amanda, but that was an issue for another day.

"It is good for there to be leaders among us." Victor sighed. "One warden cannot defend their inmate at all times."

Which was awkward, but true. Decency was something that the barge needed a bit more of.
