Neil didn't want to be here. Miss Misato always made him feel guilty and shameful, but his father's word was law. So, he did his best to hide his discomfort and picked at his pie.

Immediately, Neil's back went rigid and he sat up. Anything else likely would've embarrassed his father, which meant he'd be in a hell of a lot of trouble once they got home. "Yes, sir," he mumbled sullenly, then took a big old bite of his pie. Okay, it was good pie... even if it was made by his terrifying teacher. He looked at Misato and forced a smile after he swallowed. "Thank you for the pie, Miss Misato."

And then his eyes drifted over a little, to a nearby fella. Neil did his best not to stare much, and he quickly looked down at his pie again and forced another forkful into his mouth. He was almost expecting everybody in the room to notice, or, hell, a lightning bolt to strike him down from above.
