Ooog, brain-melty.

So I played the hell out of FF4 today - completed the Sylvan Cave, the Cave of Summons, Sealed Cave, quests for Bahamut and Odin, got FuSoYa, killed the giant of Babel, and explored the new secret dungeon.  I'm not terribly impressed with the dungeon itself; we'll see what I think after I take Palom, Porom, Edward, Yang, and Cid down there to get ( Read more... )

1) Behemoths ONLY attack if you attack them. Therefore, only use REALLY powerful attacks on it like Meteor and Bahamut, and you should take care of them fairly easily.

2) Yang is better than Kain. I didn't believe it either, but Yang is faster than everyone else in the game - he gets 2 to 3 attacks per 1 for Cecil, and 3 to 4 attacks per one to the spellcasters. However, none of the others seem worth taking, unless you absolutely have to have the twins. Edward is still worthless.

3) I'm personally at the Crystal Palace right now. Been there for a day or so - The game is just so choppy it's hard for me to play in long streches, especially when I have better emulated versions available.

Yes, Edward is still useless.

I think the Yang attack thing is due to the new glitches in the battle system. I still heart Kain.

Using Meteor/Flare/Holy on behemoths triggers awful counterattacks if I recall correctly.

Using those spells makes him counter with a maelstorm-like spell that knocks off about 80 percent of your HP. However, it doesn't kill you unless you have less than 5 HP or so, and you can heal since he won't launch any follow-up attacks unless you attack.

Also, Flare damages him for like 500, so don't bother - Go straight to Bahamut or Meteor if you're going to use spells. This is more of a note for when you have to face them before you get some of the more powerful weapons, like in Bahamut's Cave. In that, I pretty much relied on FuSoYa just Meteoring them to death.

Hmm. Interesting. I usually just abuse Cure4 (since Rosa's MP is nice and high), and I generally don't have TOO many problems by the time I get to the Crystal Tiles.

If you call two broken links "incredibly minor things", then I just won't point them out any more.

I can't help but feel like you sounded quite irritated when you wrote that.

No no no love *cuddles you* I'm sorry! I'm not irritated and I do appreciate it. I do!

But given that I updated seventy-eight HTML files for anything from broken PHP to missing links to rewriting entire tables....two broken links is minor =)

I have been looking for a new online game after Shadowbane and WOW. I play DAOC for a bit too but wasn't all that impressed. I am doing a little bit of Guild Wars from time to time. I know this is a loaded question but is FF4 that great? Is it something I should look into?

I'm not Lass, but if you like console RPGs (any of the other FFs, the Lunars, Dragon Quest / Warrior, etc.) then you'll like FF4. I believe the GBA version is only $20 to $35, which is acceptable, even though it's not a great port IMO. Slowdown issues and what not, which you'll probably only notice if you've played the originals a lot.

The slowdown isn't as bad as in Chronicles, though, for the most part. I mostly notice that it takes Rydia fucking forever to cast anything.

Have her use Virus, which has NO load time; she's beaten out attackers well before her when I've had her cast it in the past. Unless an enemy has a huge elemental weakness, it almost always does as much damage as a second-level spell, normally in the 1000 to 3000 range, depending on how leveled she is. Very few enemies (mostly just undead) have any resistance to it either.
