I discovered ffnet first and started posting my first story there. Everything was going great...until one day I couldn't access my account any more. After sending numerous e-mails to the helpdesk and getting no response, I gave up

I think part of finding the archive that's right for you is trial and error. I know people who love certain sites and other people who hate them. In September, I validated a story that I really liked and after e-mails to the author or exchange several times, I found out it had been rejected from another site. I still like the story. :-)
I think the most important thing is to find what suits you. Moderated or unmoderated, what rating, what sort of feedback, the ease of navigation, and probably a whole bunch more that I'm forgetting. And then, once you find that site you like, there's no law against posting elsewhere. Personally, after problems with AFF, I figured it's a good idea to spread out. Even if you have that one site you really love.
hahaha!! You canon nazi (oi, does that have caps?)... yeah, You Canon Nazi! I prefer the books as well, though I always buy and watch (over and over and over) the movies. Unfortunately, I've not seen many movies that are perfect replicas of the book. That sort of sucks b/c like you said about the "good parts" being cut and dumb shit being added in.
I saw the Lord of the Rings movies before I read the stories. Wow!! Can we say switcharoo? hahaha! Nearly everything is different. Well, you know what I mean. (I still like the movies better. I wonder if that is because I saw them first though. Hmmm... Would I be as biased the other way around?)
Anyway, I hear ya. That canon nazi bit was a term I sniped from someone else, though I can't remember where I heard it. I believe someone called the admins at SH that a few months back. hahaha! (Probably just mad b/c they had some rubbish plot)
I'm not sure if Canon Nazi should be capitalized or not; it's not a Canon term. :-) But I'll gladly say I am one.
The admins at SH are called a Canon Nazis, I believe, every 4.2 seconds. :-) You know, it's those little things like insisting Snape's name is Severus, not Severes; Ginevra Weasley has brown eyes; it's Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, not Hogwards School of Magic; and the characters are still British, not California surfer dudes. :-) You know, those pesky details nobody would notice.
I can only think of one movie that was actually better than the book and that was Schindler's List. The Wizard Of Oz, Gone with the Wind and The Color Purple all either equaled or gave added depth to the books. But it is a rare thing
( ... )
We'll pretend it has caps. It can be like some official title or something.
You know, I've never read The Wizard of Oz! But now that you mention it, I would like to read it (or at least have it sitting pretty on my bookshelf-hehe).
You mean Ginerva Wesley ain't got no green eyes to match Hairy's?
~snicker~
Ha! I've done that already. Put her as having blue eyes. Then, on the Lexicon, her desription jumps out at you. "Bright brown eyes..." ahhaha... Slipsies! I had Ron on the brain, I say! (is my story anyway)
I do hope they keep the Snape stuff in movie five. Seems to me they would have to show him more, eh? (being that book six is about him-sort of) How disappointing if not!
I like official titles. I've been working on Bitchy Administrator #2. :-) I will add Canon Nazi and She-Who-Tips-over-Sacred-Cows-and-Barbecues-Them to my official list of titles

The pit of voles *cough* I mean ffnet is probably the starting point for many Harry Potter fan fiction authors -- it is the easiest to get to, with a wide range of other fandoms
( ... )
I, too, started on ffn. Actually, I still have an account there under my old pen name...though I've forgotten the password and changed my email addy, so I can't even get in anymore...
But all that stuff was *gasp* Angel/Buffy fanfiction. I only found out about SH through TPMM...and then moseyed there and tentitively submitted mine and lfire1's massive fic of rambly doom there...and were surprised when it got accepted. But we had to make a ton of corrections before it was validated. It was our first story...well, real one, under the name aerynfire...and the rest with that is history (and now burried

For webpages... have you tried blogger? I know it's technically another journaling site, but you can change the layout for free and post as you would a normal website.
If you go to blogskins.com, you can find awesome layouts to customize your blogger, or if you're html code nifty you can make the layout yourself. I had someone make mine -- I can do limited coding but that's about it.
But...but...Alfonso Cuaron knows more about the books than anyone because JKR is giving him sekrit messages about how Remus is gay gay gay and his Twoo Wub is Sirius!
Ha. Ahahahaha. Ha. Hee. Not only did HBP make my ship canon, it VINDICATED the fact that the only Marauder ship was FRIENDship.
And let's not even get into what the movies do to poor ickle Ronniekins.
valis2 has done such a terrific job with The Last Sanguimagus. I have recced that so many times and I think I always will. And she is one of those downright nice authors.
I thought the first movie did a great job of capturing the book. It wasn't perfect, but it really was better than I expected, of course, I had no expectations so that probably had something to do with it. It's been downhill since then. Each movie leaves out more and more while inserting things that, quite frankly in my humble opinion, are not as good.
Canon Stalinist just doesn't have the same sort of ring as Canon Nazi. :-)
Have you really numbered your appearances on fandom_wank? I don't think I've made it there yet. But I have this disturbing tendency to go against the sheep on WIKTT to disagree with popular opinions which will probably earn me a spot there sooner or later.

I'm not even going to ask about a Dumbledore/Hagrid sandwich. In fact, I may have to be Obliviated just for thinking about it. :-)

LOL It wasn't really that bad --- okay, yes it was, but the Snape part was really well written (even if it was only a brief glimpse).
