I like reading stories at SH or at the Petutlant Poetess because I am sure the English there will be good (at least, I am sure that I won't learn wrong things. Yes, I improve my English when I read fanfictions (or I think I do because the other day, I was on ff.net and I did notice grammar and spelling mistakes).
As for the new project for SH. I know you can't say anything. But can you answer me? Will it be released soon -before the end of the year- or in a half year or more? Just to have an idea?
It should be released before the end of the year, depending on the programmer. Efiction, the most commonly use script for fanfiction archives (which is why they all look basically the same) is a good program for small archives. It's got add-ons and things you can tweak to give it some degree of customization and uniqueness, but SH is no longer a small archive. However, whenever you have a team of programmers working on something, it has to be thoroughly bug tested to make sure there are no problems. And some of the special features are still with bug testers. But it will have features that Efiction could not deal with *does happy dance* and will really unique -- at least until some wannabe copies it, which will be difficult to do Efiction. Hiring programmers is really the best way to get this done. I really wish I could talk about it.
I think my Snape is probably a combination. I admit, one story heavily depends on the frock coat with all the buttons. But it was written for the Buttons Challenged at TPMM, so the frock coat had to make an appearance.
The producers understand that kids today have a louder voice in parental spending than ever before. So many things are being marketed to kids. I won't forget some of the stupid movies and TV shows my stepdaughter forced me to watch -- stuff that I swear made my brain rot. But I was and still am convinced that parents do need to be there to see what their kids are watching and listening to.
I'm a Canon Nazi, and I'm not afraid to admit it. I love the books with a passion. I don't go swooning over Alan Rickman. I like the guy, I think he's a great actor... but he's an actor. I've never swooned over an actor, I fall for the characters and I differentiate them in my head. Odd, I know. Anyhow, I agree, they have not done HP justice in the films and my husband is already rolling his eyes at me over my complaints about GOF. Granted, I've been complaining since I found out that they cut out Dudley's Ton Tongue Toffee scene, which I thought would've been hillarious. ;-)
Regarding archives:
Finally, I'm a competitive person. I had heard SH was difficult to get posted for a newbie writer. This is the exact reason that I initially posted to Ashwinder. I'm extremely competitive and from what I'd heard from my short trip into fandom it was hard to post there, they were strict, and not to expect them to accept your first submission. I squeed when my first story was posted within hours of submission. Luck. LOL

I'm really surprised this post has garnered the attention it has. I thought before about doing a pros and cons and listing everything that's good and bad on each site. However, I can no longer claim objectivity.
There are over 2200 stories posted at SH and 28,000 members. I think we can officially say we are a medium-sized archive. :-) There are some gems on FF.net, you have to wade through an awful lot of crap to find them. I've noticed some of the most popular writers from there and other unmoderated sites keep coming to SH, which does make me happy (yes, I am a collector just like Slughorn). Now I hope we can get the other archives to take off like Ashwinder.
But the movies bother me because they cut scenes I really wanted to see (like Snape showing his Dark Mark)
But, but...that should be in the GoF movie, shouldn't it? They cut that scene OUT?! Please tell me you were only making this up as an example. It was bad enough that they didn't show his hissy fit at the end of PoA and thereby missed the chance to give movie!Snape some depth in character. But the Dark Mark scene is IMPORTANT! *cries*
I wish I could say I was joking. But all the early reviewers say it's not there. Nor is the scene were Dumbledore sends Snape out "if you're prepared".
On the other hand, by omitting these key scenes, they make Snape undeniably a bad guy for movie six which makes me think there is redemption in movie seven.
I'm happily posting my first multi-chaptered story at FF.net. I'm enjoying the ability to put up a chapter -read some reviews -take it down again and correct all the glaring errors, add italics cos I just worked out how to use them etc. One day when it is finished I will put it to my beta and then submit it to SH but it's not good enough yet. If I just had it sitting on my hard drive I don't think that I would have the motivation to finish it. I enjoy finding gold nuggets at FF.net (I also run a small pool on worst fic. in several categories)
It definitely makes sense than to use an unmoderated site prescreened and beta read your story. The feedback is nearly immediate and if you can work through the "squee" reviews, you can find some discerning readers.
There are some really good writers who get started at unmoderated sites. And for that, I will always be grateful to not only the writers, but the people who will wade through the other stuff and get the word out on them.
