It's no secret that I love winter, and I realized today that I don't have many pictures of Lake Superior when it's frozen, and while I am hoping to get some great shots when we hike out to the ice caves, it looks like it's going to be a while still until the ice is frozen enough ( Read more... )

Lovely pictures - especially because I don't share your affinity for winter and these photos put me in a summertime kinda mood (:o)

That first pic is pretty. I don't think people realize how vast and grand the Great Lakes are.

What are these ice caves of which you speak? My husband was planning to go ice fishing on Erie today but his buddy bailed so instead he's cleaning the garage (boo for him, yay for me!).

Thank you! And you're right; I think it's easy to see one corner of the Great Lakes and get used to a smaller area, but the vastness of them still takes my breath away sometimes, and I haven't even seen them all!

There are some sea caves (actually I don't know why we call them sea caves, it's not the ocean!) on some of the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior, and when the lake freezes and the ice is thick enough, you can walk out to some of them, even walk inside them. I've lived here a few years and never gone, so it's typical that the year I decide I am going for sure, it's been unseasonably warm and the ice isn't thick enough yet!

:D That does work out better for you! Does your husband ice fish a lot? I love to fish but I've actually only been ice fishing a few times.

Oooh - the caves sound awesome. I hope the ice quickly thickens ;-)

My husband has only been ice fishing, oh, maybe 10 times. I think he just goes 'cuz he's jonesin' to fish in the dead of winter (and after Ohio's Whitetail bow season has ended). Come Springtime, he's on one body of water or another every chance he gets. He's insanely outdoorsy (:o)

So your car is named the Blackbird now? You keep changing it on me.

Those are such pretty pictures :)

Yeah, I renamed her the Blackbird - it's a much more fitting name. I only changed the name once, though! There was an entry about it a while back that you commented on.

Thanks! It's easy to take pretty shots of Superior.

You live near there? Oh my goodness I am so jealous. I would love to live amongst such beautiful scenery and be able to take my canoe out for a paddle without travelling for miles in the car.

Ice caves. Sounds like it will be an awesome day out.
Beautiful photo's, makes me wish I was there :)

Thank you! I drove about an hour and a half for some of these photos, but I'm so used to driving, so that's still relatively close in my book! And it's worth it because the scenery is gorgeous. I'll miss it when I am done with school.

Oooh I wish I had a canoe!
