WiFi security is undoubtedly a problem. We get round it at my work by having a guest wifi separate to the wifi for people with work machines. I'd guess not having that is a cost issue, but broadband isn't that expensive!

I know very little about such things, but a properly implemented VPN (virtual private network) should mean you can access the network from anywhere, but it does make sense to limit the machines that can access the VPN. Personal laptops are far more likely to have already been compromised and then they're just letting the nasties straight in through the front door.
All that security doesn't really help you if you can't do your job though :(
