NaNo idea

Was talking to the girls at work today about how much I was enjoying reading The Night Circus (had started it but put it down to read Dracula) and was mentioning that it had been a NaNo novel. If I remember correctly, she had taken a dare and... Voila. A novel. Okay, not voila. But she did go down a path she'd never intended to go on ( Read more... )

It makes Nano more fun, doing it that way!

Good choice.

It will be interesting to do it that way since I've been maniacal about having a "plan" going into the month almost every year before. This year I'm losing about 10 hours a week of writing because of traveling time due to where I'm living so I need to be ready to write when my butt hits the chair. The last couple of years, I've really dragged my feet because my muse was sulking about HAVING to follow the plan. I didn't commit enough time and effort to either Camp NaNo this year so something has got to change or I'm going to lose this year!

But it certainly sounds more fun so hooray!

You might have heard this story already, but my 2nd year of Nano, I ended up in the ER on Halloween night with a herniated disc in my back. I had a plan to do a romance novel that year. I ended up losing the first 9 days of November, on my couch, stoned and completely out of it on Vicodin.

Anyway, when I finally poked my head up, I was ready to chuck Nano. Then I just propped myself in my chair and started writing this goofy, totally masabatory sci fi story that had always been in my head, using the dares thread and doing a whole lot of wacky stuff. It started with this and grew from there and now the story is at 200k.

I've never had so much fun writing something. I ended up hitting the 50k Thanksgiving weekend that year. :)

Go forth and be goofy, my friend!

That is awesome! What a way to take something that could have kept you out of the entire year and turned it into a really fun memory! My first year, I didn't start until the 7th because that was when I found out about it. I did a lot of dares and what not. That was fun.

I think I will have my OCD planner make a list of all previous dares when the site opens back up again... and then I will probably not use ANY of them! *grins* But it'll keep my "planner" occupied.
