Hey, I think I asked you this last year, but what do you stand to gain by reading the Book of Mormon in German? Its source language is English, right? So there's nothing lost in translation because you understand English? Confused gentile, here!

You asked something similar, but not quite. Part of it is a language exercise for myself, trying to keep my German in shape. As I've read, though, it's been really interesting to see how it can shed light on the meaning and use of certain words that are particularly flexible in English, or at least have changed a little of their use and meaning since 1830. Nothing earth-shattering, but a couple of examples:

Alma 1:33 "...they became more still, and durst not commit any wickedness..." (emphasis added) In German the word is "friedlicher" which can be translated as "still," but also means "peaceful."

Alma 32:28 "...it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yeah, it beginneth to be delicious to me." The word in German is "köstlich," which is often translated as "prescious," though when referring to food means "exquisite."

Again, it's mostly to keep my German from deteriorating, but I find it interesting how it can shed a little light on how an English word is being used as well.
