I have a client ... I like her as  person and she has been a great, consistent client.  They took off a few months when she had knee surgery, but I got them back a bit over a week ago and put a "welcome back to work" ride on Bud, in which he did fantastic.  We just walked as he has done next to nothing during the break and he was driving fit before ( Read more... )

You should feel smug for showing those guys how to drive with a little compassion. What's with show trainers being so macho? That's the style here too.

I'm not a fan of treeless saddles at all - until the technology improves to the point where there is actually a tree in them to distribute the rider's weight then it's just a bareback pad with stirrups - a bad idea. I do completely understand the frustration of not having a saddle that fits.

That is super frustrating about your client and that poor horse's feet. You cannot get away without mucking here, it turns into disgusting mud and it's obvious. I've been in the position many times where I'm making gentle suggestions for the welfare of the horse and I've found with experience it's just better to spit it out and let them process the direct honest information. Most likely they'll come back to you and repeat what you said as if it was their idea (I don't mind this at all as long as the horse is no longer suffering).

I imagine part of it is ignorance, they don't know a better way and this is "the way it is done" so they keep doing it because it "works." It's a terrible cycle.

Have you dealt with any recently? I've heard some of them have really improved in just the last few years. I have certainly heard that they can create pressure points and lack spinal clearance. I'm not expecting it to be a magic bullet and I have had good success with my other treed saddles. Wish I would have stuck with Fabtron or Big Horn and I may still replace this one with another Big Horn. Since I can trial one of the treeless Iam going to give the horses the chance to tell me if it is worth pursuing further.

Here's a few innovative saddle designs I have found while searching, though most of them are out of my range, not all treeless.

Pity and the client’s turnout/stall situation, I’m not sure how they expected the problem to go away by spreading it out in a ring around the property... Brains are funny things!

Cool about the hackney - roadsters are always fun to watch.

I know. They aren't going to be able to really fix his feet (or their other horse's) until they get them out of the filth.

The good ones are fun to watch! It is a pity so few have good training.
