True, but then at some point you have a crummy old tire to get rid of. At least sand's useful.
I had a great idea at one point to try to chemically devulcanize tires and repour them into horse stall floor mats. Turns out reclaiming the rubber from tires is pretty challenging.
Free now, disposal fee (years) later or buy bags and sand now and zero cost to use/get rid of it. I'm also thinking it would take several sand bags to distribute the weight whereas the tire is conveniently sized to just drop on it and have a reasonably even distribution of weight.
One of those "sounds like an awesome idea" at the time and then you realize how difficult and tricky it is. Aren't some tires reinforced with a metal weave?
