That is interesting to see broken down.

Of course, I blame all the dead parents on archetypes and the fact that fairy tales always have fucked up family dynamics. :D

In Disney movies? Not really. They don't follow the Hero's Journey pattern.

What's even more interesting is some of the specifics.

Like:

All of the parents that died? Animals.

All of the characters that become parents? Animals.

(Not the same films, though.)

What counts as a protagonist?

In Pinnochio, would you count Pinnochio, Gepetto, Jiminy Cricket?

And of course, goodness, what to do with Peter Pan?

The protagonist is the main character, of course, but you'll see I said "important character" to cover characters that aren't the protagonist.

So in Peter Pan, I count Peter under the "orphan" column, while the Darling children get a check under "have both parents."

In the case of Pinocchio, I decided to count Geppetto as a single father, since he is the one who carved Pinocchio and then took care of him once he was brought to life, and the Blue Fairy didn't stick around. Jiminy may be an advisory figure, but he isn't a parent.
