No H1N1 at C2E2 (that's so last year)

Apr 22, 2010 00:02

Oh hell, I haven't made a real post in almost a month. My last post was from PAX East. Which makes it mildly funny that I came on here with intentions to post about C2E2 (or, properly, C2E2). Which is another show from Reed Exhibitions, or at least the division now known as ReedPop. As I attend New York Comic Con, New York Anime Fest, PAX East, and ( Read more... )

So, who hasn't seen Kick Ass yet?

Well, me, but I somehow don't think that helps you.

I haven't seen Kick-Ass, either, but it would be hard for us to plan something. :/

We should plan to be at the same con sometime instead. ;) I think that would be awesome.

Which of the Second City shows did you see? I had a good time there when I was in Chicago, with the audience itself proving the biggest disappointment...

I've been thinking about going to Shore Leave one of these years, unfortunately it's not going to be this year due to budgetary constraints.

The list for the remainder of 2010 appears to be:

AnimeNEXT, June 18-20, Somerset, NJ
Otakon, July 30-August 1, Baltimore, MD
PAX, Sept 3-5, Seattle, WA
New York Comic Con, Oct 8-10, New York, NY (co-habiting with New York Anime Fest this year)

We saw the Second City Revue, which was generally funny but as I commented to i_am_scifi, so much of the humor was Chicago-centric that I now know what it feels like when people from outside of NYC watch SNL... or Letterman... or Late Night with Conan... or Daily Show...

Also, too many of the performers were derivatives of previous Second City alumni, and no one really had a stand-out personality. Looking through the list of alumni, it doesn't seem like they've had a break out star since 2003...

I won't be at Shore Leave this year, either--too much else going on around that time, including other travel plans (such as a con in Minneapolis that I'm planning to attend). Shore Leave is a good con, though, which feels surprisingly personable given the profile of the guests they get.

I was having coffee with someone on the weekend who's trying to budget for Otakon and I thought of you, which continued me along this thought train about how it'd be great to see you in person again, and how I've been trying to make a return visit to New York City happen for the past three years without success. :/

When watching NYC-based comedy, you just get used to all the local references and geocentric focus--and I can laugh at a Governor Paterson impersonation just as readily as the next guy. ;) Oddly enough, the most alienating example of this that I ever experienced was the warmup guy at Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? He really didn't seem to realise that anyone outside the area might be in the studio audience...
