A Little Less Conversation

I was sick for most of last week so that torpedoed any post-con entries I would have made or any other plans I had. Like some entries for our Nonfiction Blog, which unfortunately were also shot in the head by the website being down or slow. I've got a post about the Nonfiction comics panel from Saturday to make, and dammit I'm going to do it, given ( Read more... )

I dunno... I never rented anything from Kim's, though I did go there at least once. Renting videos was always a pain in the butt. Where I grew up, we didn't have a real Blockbuster, just local video rental places that sucked, and the library, which was free, unless you brought it back late. So we did that. Actually, the library is the only thing I really miss about that town... But then when I started college, suddenly there was Netflix, and it was so easy, and though not free, I could hold onto things and shift things around... Exactly what I'd always wanted to do. So something like Kim's... Too bad he didn't start a website and stream stuff. I don't think blaming the Internet for the demise is fair.

Sorry, I rambled. Lol.

I never rented from Kim's, I tried to get an account once but I didn't have a credit card nor did I have the $250 they wanted as a deposit.

To be fair to Mr. Kim, legally he couldn't stream since he owned a lot of rare stuff that I imagine would be a pain to find the copyright owners for. However, I don't think anything really would have stopped them from starting up a mail-order business like Netflix that could operate locally. But I think they probably wanted to keep some of the rarer stuff under tight control, because it was harder to replace... and though they could have broken the law and just rented out DVD copies, putting it up on the Internet makes them easier to track and crack down on. It always drove me nuts that they did rent out some bootleg stuff (notably fansubs), and it was hilarious that when they were busted, it was for mix-tapes.

I've rented some weird shit on Netflix.

I was too lazy to get up early on Sat of NYCC, so I'm very much looking forward to your write up of it.
